Randy Lahey
Why do musicians go downhill so much whenever they get sober?
gunsfanoldie
Its not true. Next question.I think what you're thinking of is when musicians get older. Musicians get older, and around that time they also get sober. So the sobriety doesn't make their career go downhill, its the fact that they aren't young and hungry anymore and now have nothing left to say. Can you mention an artist that was only good when he wasn't sober? That also wasn't much older than their prime era? Like someone that made one album sober in the middle of making amazing albums not sober.
luciusfunk
Queen were never heavy into drugs or alcohol. If consider all their albums being made sober.

Crash Diet
Some musicians do NEED drugs to be creative. Some doesn't.It all depends of the bands/artists (what genre, "who" they are, what personality they have got etc.)
wasted
Queen were never heavy into drugs or alcohol. If consider all their albums being made sober.i thought queen set the standard for after show excess. I uess they make their best records in their twenties when they are suicidal drug addicts. After they hit 30 they just worry about their weight and all the wrong they done. Then get in some law suits and start listening to whats on the hot 100, settle down with a broad and pretty soon they are making pop records about their wasted life and officially suck. Snake-Pit
To be drunk and a success is a feet not too many take, kudos to those who do. and R.I.P to the ones who... Didn't manage to sober up? idk, r.i.p still.
Val22
It's true of some musicians, but not all of them.I guess when they're drunk or high, they have those problems, but once their sober, those problems are gone and they have to write about normal stuff. lol
dalsh327
Depends on the artist and the era they came up in.
chevelle
Because if they live long enough to make that decision, it's usually when they're getting a bit older anyway. I think age is the real thing that bites a lot of musicians in the ass.
izzygirl
I guess drugs give them that bonus which makes them go from good to outstanding. I miss the old Justin Hawkins. Queen were never heavy into drugs or alcohol. If consider all their albums being made sober.Weren't they known for their wild parties where cocaine was everywhere? Anyway, they were absolutely amazing so it doesn't matter.

Anyway, they were absolutely amazing so it doesn't matter. Just because the drugs are available doesn't mean they were into the drugs much. Freddie's the only one who really ever did coke, but it didn't affect his music. Nowhere near Bowie living on coke, milk and red peppers. DieselDaisy
It is actually a very good question. The Stones put out their greatest album (Exile) at the peak of Richards' heroin addiction. Metallica's best stuff (Master etc) was put out when Hetfield was on the sauce. Ozzy. Guns N' Roses (Slash, Duff, Stevie and Izzbo's best music was when they were drugged up and boozing, in GN'R). The Beatles. The list is endless.About Queen, May was an alcoholic around the time of the late '70s - early '80s. This was not when Queen were at their peak though. hellobeatle
Case and point: Eric ClaptonPre-sober: For Your Love, Sunshine of Your Love, White Room, Layla Post-sober: Wonderful Tonight, Tears in Heaven, Change the World, Layla Unplugged
emilyslovak
It's not always true. After John Frusciante got sober he went on to make records with RHCP like Californication and solo like To Record Water. That's the best example that I can think of. LTD
Trent Reznor sends his regards I'd link any recent performance by Marilyn Manson as case in point on how....awesome artists who stay on drugs well past their 40s remain.. but it is too soul crushing experience to watch what he has become Edited August 30, 2013 by LTD
Guest Len B'stard
Oasis, Eminem and NIN all come to mind when I think of current musicians who went downhill once they got sober.Oasis started going downhill the more they did drugs, case in point, Be Here Now. Same with Eminem, he was off his tits by the time encore came around and apart from a few songs there were certain songs on that album that were literally about nothing, like Rainman or Big Weenie, thats just a person with talent coming out of his arse, nothing left to talk about, off his face on drugs, putting on a silly voice and just rambling his way through a song just cuz he can. Seriously, what is that about? Hilairious though it certainly is!The closest The Beatles came to really fucking up was when the drugs coloured their music more than their own character. The fact is some bands can handle it well and take it for what it is and work within in so you reckon it's the drugs doing it but it's not and it never is. Not ever.
