Snowmass
Marc- in your opinion does Axl really consider anything post 1993 "G n R"? It seems that in the beginning (immediately after the falling out with Slash/Duff/Matt et al) he (in his mind) was continuing on with Guns to spite them. Then it would seem it just spiraled (with the help of Beta, Fernando, Team Brazil, the enablers) into the mess it is now. He must know deep down inside that what he has now is not Guns n fucking Roses right?
recklessroad
I think the way he sees it that Slash and Duff quit and he saved the band. What other choice did he have?
Snowmass
I think the way he sees it that Slash and Duff quit and he saved the band. What other choice did he have? Really.....it's that simple? He has no loyalty to the original 5 that were the magic behind AFD, Lies & UYI's? He seriously thinks (and you seem to agree) that the last 20 years Guns n Roses have been a band? From the Buckethead & Finck days to the DJ/Thal days its all about "saving the band"? I love what you do on here (the banter with us fans) but totally baffled by your response here. His other choice was to go at it solo and let emotions calm down and try and rekindle the band at a later date. ohlovelyrita
I think the way he sees it that Slash and Duff quit and he saved the band. What other choice did he have?I appreciate your insights but I read things for years where Duff and Slash said they quit. You know the saying "Where is this life there is hope"?! Axl didn't leave the band. If he was so difficult in their eyes then couldn't they havejust stayed away without quitting. I'm not getting that Axl consciously wanted them to quit. He might not have known they were at their limit.I think Axl can be honest with himself in the same way Duff can. They both seem like self-aware guys.I read an interview where I remember Duff distinctly saying "We left the band". He added something to the effect that there was no one to blame but himself but he just quit. Can anyone find that quote?Steppin Out: "What's your opinion of Axl Rose?Slash: I haven't talked to him since I quit. That puts that concept to rest. There has to be more to the story than that. No, its pretty simple. He was heading in one direction and I was heading in another. It was actually a slow progression from the days when we first made a record all the way up to the final record. When our last tour ended, he made it clear which way he wanted to go musically. I tried to hang on and stay with the band as long as I could, but there was definatly limitations. It just got to the point where we couldnt work together anymore.Steppin Out: How do you feel about Axl continuing to tour as Guns N' Roses?Slash: Axl is making the call for whatever his 3 percent of the band is worth. He's making the call these days. My life was just miserable then. I couldn't deal with it. So I just left. So when he wanted to use the name Guns N' Roses I said sure, I didn't want anything to do with it."I should add that they could have stayed in the band and been inactive. Once you quit, the public then is aware of the holes in the ship. Edited September 3, 2013 by ohlovelyrita
recklessroad
I agree that he should have put out 5 records by now but he never dealt with the anger of what he thinks Slash did or said and the the abandonment properly So things move slow. I think you're right.if you dont deal with your issues at all they will come back to haunt you.Axl needs to reach acceptance around Slash and Duff and move on already.he also has childhood trauma.but it's no excuse.people have come back from far worse.I think Axl might have some underlying mental disturbance.this complicates things.it's probably the reason why he can't let go.it's a sad story. I don't think Axl wants the spotlight more than he gets with the territory of lead singer. He suffered more than the rest for getting all that "undue pressure" being the face of the band.It seems to me that Slash was right not to wait for Axl and Axl was right not to wait for Slash to come back. The growth that each of them received from their journeys is worth a lot. I don't image if they came back together c. 96/97 there would have been an synergy like the past. No one talks about how this situation could be worse. They could have put out one more album together and neither of them could have liked the last material as much as anything that came before. No matter what anyone says both Slash and Axl made choices they can live with. I don't hear regrets from them. They are doing well individually. I tend to believe that Axl has enough material to fill 5 albums should he want. I really think the best material in 2 decades is yet to come for Axl and Slash in their respective bands. I think they both will up their game. stumbleine
I dont even care if Axl "created" it.show some respect to your fellow man.or in this case, your bro Slash.
tk1
I don't mind that Axl has the rights to the name. He came up with it and my understanding is he also wanted to secure it in case a band member died or quit just to avoid any potential issues. The part I don't agree with is, why force the issue? Nobody died or was looking to quit at that time. So, why quit the original partnership and then start a new band with Slash and Duff being employees? How in the hell would Axl not expect those guys to feel disrespected? Slash certainly has said some things he shouldn't have but I would have been upset too if I were in that position. You can argue Slash and Duff shouldn't have signed the name away and that is true. Still, that was a shitty move by Axl to quit the band and start his own 'GN'R' that basically demoted the guys who helped break the band in the first place... Amir
Over the years, Axl has convinced himself that he had a grand masterplan for GNR from "before [he] knocked on Izzy's door", and that Slash was out to get him from day one. He admitted that it would have been financial suicide to give up the name when working on ChiDem. He also said that it helped the other guys he hired to get an idea of what they were going for, not necessarily in terms of exact sound, but in terms of legacy and timeless quality (my interpretation). It's clear from his rants and music he sees the world as one full of heroes and villains; he even said he was Serpico to their bad cops. He can't see Slash as anything other than 100% pure evil at this stage. It's Axl against the world, songs like Madagascar make his worldview pretty clear. sweetness
kind of a silly question when you consider the last 20 years of events in the GNR world
Snowmass
People shouldn't be allowed to attack Marc's opinion. You asked he gave it. Please leave the man alone. Not sure if this is directed to me or what but no 'attack' on Marc meant. I love that he opines for us. I'm just a little .....perplexed...at his response to my original question. His reply was odd. Axl was trying to 'save' the band and 'what other option did he have'. Well A- he didn't 'save' the band....they will go down as a joke. B- options...really? He could have done anything (musically) in 1993. He had the R&R world at his fingers. Anyone would have worked with him....he could have had some kick ass solo stuff.

I can see your point. People have been attacking him in a few threads lately and I found it really unfortunate. I mean this guy has opened a part of the GN'R lore we'd never hear about. recklessroad
Don't worry, my skin is thick I could take it. I think people should have freedom of speech. You ask me I tell you my thoughts and if you don't agree with them, then thats fine. Not a problem. My thoughts don't have to be right or wrong, there just my thoughts
