Axl behind the scenes Donnington 2006

The crowd was very hostile at first and I think it pissed Axl off. They were throwing shit, booing, etc. I remember reading live accounts of it here, people were saying he disappeared off the stage for a while and rumour had it he was demanding to leave but Beta wouldn't let him (probably realizing how much liability it would cause). Eventually he went back on stage and just stood there for a few songs with a pissed-off look on his face, BUT his voice sounded amazing. Listen to "Better" from that gig, he's just standing there and not exhausting himself running around the stage, so his voice is terrifying.

Eventually the crowd warmed up and got into it, and by the end of the show everyone was in a good mood. The band released the night's performance of Nightrain for free on their website later on.

It's weird looking back on that era now, I don't think people fully appreciated how good Axl looked or sounded. He got so much shit for the braids but honestly, he looked pretty good for a 40-something dude. "No homo."

Just compare the difference in five years, vocally and physically:

I wonder what the five or six ways axl was fucked over during that show were. We know one was someone standing in a hallway, temporarily blocking axl. That's fucking horrible. I can totally understand why axl felt like walking away from the show and all those ungrateful selfish baby fans in the audience.

Why were they being hostile at first?

It was a pissed up UK festival crowd at the spiritual home of rock/metal who of course wanted to show their displeasure because it wasn't "Slash and the old guys". Oddly enough Guns came on early that night. It was only as I recognised the intro tape from bootlegs from Hammerstein that I knew they were starting so I bolted down and got relatively near the front. I recall threatening to strike some wanker who decided to whip out some water balloons in an effort to upset the mental, ginger one.

Admittedly when the band went offstage for about 10 mins (sound issues and a wet stage) it was a bit worrying but I felt that by the end of the evening they'd won the vast majority of the crowd over.

damn he was hot as hell. no homo

If you are male and saying Axl was hot why do you feel the need to say 'no homo'? Nothing wrong with men admiring the looks of other men at all, women do it all the time & nobody thinks anything so why do males feel they have to justify saying another man is hot, good looking, sexy etc? Is there a stigma amongst men that if they say this they are automatically considered gay, I certainly don't think that way but men who admit that another is good looking I reckon is being honest. Good on you for that.

The wet stage is what started it. There were multiple puddles on the stage, Axl slipped in one, they were concerned about electrical hazards, etc. This put him in a bad mood, he went off-stage for a while, the crowd (which was unsettled to begin with) grew hostile... Ron went out and took the crowd on by himself which was pretty brave, as a new member and everything.

Axl came back, they did YCBM and Axl walked off the stage again before it finished. Ron finished singing it if I recall correctly. Then I guess Axl came back and stood still for all of Better.

Eventually the show kind of turned... they'd definitely won the crowd over by the end of the set. It was a pretty rough ride for the first half though.
