GNR and Canter's Deli

Hey Marc,

I know that GNR used to hang out a lot at Canter's Deli, and there is even a famous photo of them that was shot there. Can you tell us anything about the role of GNR in Canter's - or vice versa - the role of Canter's in GNR? How often did the group hang out there? Did they spend a lot of time there, and what did they do while there? Did they come just to eat, or was it a place that they and their friends hung out? Did they look like punks and make a lot of commotion and scare off the other customers? Can you tell us what their favorite menu items were? And finally, can you tell us anything more about the photo linked below?

Thanks!

Slash used to eat there with his parents when he was a kid. When we met when we were 12 years old, we would ride our bikes there and eat. I gave him a job there in 1982/83. Canter's is also the place where we first met Duff in 1984. In 1985 when the AFD line up first got together I would either bring them food or sometimes I would take them there to eat.

When they got back from Hell Tour in June of 1985 which was really their second gig, they were hungry and also needed some photos to use for flyers. Canter's was the place where they got to feed 2 birds with the same bread. They got to eat after not having a good meal for the week that they were on Hell Tour and got to take some cool photos too. Jack Lue did the offstage stuff because he knew how to use a camera better then I did. I only learned how to take concerts photos and didn't want to fuck up the photos they needed for flyers. It would be hit and miss for me they could have come out under or over exposed if I did them. Anyway Jack got the money shot

That day Jack took the booth photo and also photos were taken in the back alley. One was used on the back cover of The EP and in the sleeve of Lies. A few more ended up on Flyers. If you take a good look at the booth photo you will see the look in there eyes, they knew they were the perfect match at that time. That photo tells a 1,000 words and yes I was right there when they took it. It was the start of a monster. I will never forget watching it all unfold after that day.

There was never any problem how the dressed or how they acted except one time back in 1984 Hollywood Rose days I took Axl and Slash and their girlfriends there, I left them there for a bit while I went to fix something and when I came back they had had a food fight. Not cool, I blamed Slash because he should have known better not to shit where you eat and I put a whip cream cake into his face.
They ate they items that we do best like Matzo Ball soup, Corned Beef, Pastrami our homemade pickles, bakery items. The rainbow was more of a rock n' roll hang out. Canter's is the place to eat after the bars closed. I also would take them to Tommy's to get burgers. Axl didn't forget about that because when he was on the Jimmy Kimmel show he brought the Tommy's truck for all the guest.

Hey Marc,

Did the guys in the band always dress like in the photos above? They wore some pretty loud and outrageous clothing back in the day. Did they always dress like that, even when hanging out, or was that stuff reserved for stage only? Did you dress like that too? I was a teenager in the mid 90s and my friends and I used to dress like skater punks, it seemed really cool at the time but to be honest it kind of embarrasses me now (I'm in my mid 30s now haha)!
