Hey Marc,

Where you able watch them record any of the songs for Appetite and or LIES? Or the demo for Live Like a Suicide?

If so can you explain what the 'vibe' was?

Can you tell us what it was like to see and hear Axl recording his vocals!

Or maybe seeing Slash your best freind recording his guitar parts?

When Appetite was finished and released, were they concerned that the album wasn't taking off?

Also about Lies, do you know if they ever considered doing the acoustic version of November Rain for that, or if any other songs were being considered that didn't make it.

Did they ever want to call the albums anything different then what it became?

Thanks alot Marc.

I was there for their first demo in Sept 1985. I didn't see them do the Sound City one in May 1986 but I was there some of the Pasha/Live Like a Suicide one. I also was there for some of the AFD ones. To me it was just the band doing what I knew they can do. It was just the next step to getting the music to the people. Nothing special to report. The special part was watching to songs being put together and when they wrote them. Also I do remember hearing the AFD demo when they were done recording it and being blown away that they nailed it all around. I was really glad that they went with Mike Clink. No one else could have captured it the way he did. Also he didn't fuck around with the arrangements like most producers think they have to. What a Fucking masterpiece it turned out to be!!

I still think its the best hard rock record ever made.

What's great is all the back stories about the band. Where they came from, how they met, what they did together etc.. All of it adds to the greatness of Appetite.

I always looked at LIES as an extension of AfD. I love that album to.

Marc would it be fair to say that they were just going with the flow and not really aware of what Appetite became?? Did you ever talk with Slash or Axl about how important AfD was to so many people?

I don't think they thought it was a big deal. I think Axl thought he could bury it with YUI, and as good as Nov Rain and Estranged are there was no way AFD could ever get upstaged. There can be great stuff but it would just be more great stuff. I think only now do they see how great that record turned out to be.

Yeah, UYI is loaded with more great songs. The one noticeable difference, besides Matt, is the final sound of the albums.

Did you ever hear the rougher version that Slash talks about in his book? From what I made of his comments, he had a copy that didn't contain the sound effects or all the over dubs and that it was more Appetite sounding.

I think he said he was surprised by how different it sounded when compared to the final released versions.

I've been listening to the Illusion records alot lately. For me it's Slashs best work individually. As a whole, its Appetite, if that makes any sense. I would put Slash and Izzy up near the top on a list of guitar duos. I just wish the overall sound of the UYI albums was better. Izzys guitar is to low in the mix and Matts drums have to much reverb. Two great records though.

I'd love to hear a raw version of the UYI songs. As they stand now they're too polished and over-produced, sound clips, etc. Motley Crue fell into that kind of thing after SATD. Their first two albums had a raw, edgy sound they never recaptured.

No I never heard it but to me it doesn't matter. The songs are what they are.

Yeah maybe, but I think it would be cool to someday get a rawer version. Much like Let It Be Naked by The Beatles.

That versions didn't exists anymore...

The tapes erased accidentally or some shit like this :max:

The master tapes? Is this confirmed to be true?

Edit: if you mean the versions Slash had, then that doesn't really matter. If the master tapes are in some vault then it's still possible to do whatever. Produce a rawer version.

The Masters are probably in the vault and will never see the light of day for a remaster. We don't even have a 25th Anniversary edition of AFD

No shit. I just said it's possible, not that it's likely to happen.

Wasn't some kind of package released in Canada? Officially, but not approved by Axl?

Yeah, good thought about MC. To me, their earlier albums were a bit under produced, but are still real good. Dr. Feelgood sounded great, they matured musically on that record whoever produced it did a fantastic job.
