Rage Against The Machine

Good band, actually used to be my favourite but they are the most overrated band in the world along with Nirvana and Daft Punk. Except Nirvana are 600 trillion miles ahead of those two. Not to mention the people that overrate them are the types that wouldn't know anything other than Killing in the Name or Bulls on Parade at most.

This thread won't end well.

Freedom fighting guerrillas, champions of teenage boys locking themselves in their rooms when told to clean up and screaming "FUCK YOU I WONT DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!"

Ironically signed to Sony Records :P

I don't mean to shit on Snake Pit's threads, but fuck god damnit I hate RATM, Korn, Rob Zombie, Limp Bizkit, SOAD and basically all that shit :bitchfight:

Axl die hards like to make out ACDC only do 1 song several different ways, RATM are actually guilty of that.

Edit: hated RATM back in 95 or whatever, hate em now- but please remember Snake Pit, DOOM LOVES YOU

I'm not a huge RATM fan by any means and I actually agree with your post - EXCEPT lumping them in with those guys.

That first album is one the heavidst albums ever. I mean... Kiling In The Name Of, Know Your Enemy and Wake Up are amazing. Thing is...it got old pretty fast and they don't practice what they preach. I loved when they came to Brazil to play in the SWU festival and told everyone from the main area to invade the VIP Area uo in the front but after the show when the reporter asked Tom if he was travelling first class and staying in a five-star hotel and if he wanted to share them with the fans he barelly knew what to say.

Sometimes I think people missed the boat when it came to RATM. Their music isn't for everyone, so I can see how that might of happened. Tom Morello is/was one of the most innovative guitarists to come along. He's no Van Halen, Vai, or any number of world class shredders. But he wasn't from that era either. He was from the era of "guitar solos are a waste." Nobody was playing guitar solos during the mid to late 90's. So to judge him based off of that is a little unfair imo, because he was still playing them, he just was trying to be different. Thats why all the effects, besides they fit the rage sound well. The first album does have some really good solos on it imo, but each album after that did seem to be less and less. But solos weren't really Morello's thing, riffs were. And that mofo could riff with the best of them. IMO his riffs are the best since Page in his zeppelin glory. Even Slash's riffs feel weak when compared to Morello.

Zach gets a bad wrap also because of the whole rap/rock fad that followed. You gotta remember that first rage album dropped in what 91? 92? Thats a good 7 years before all the limp bizkit bullshit killed that genre. The only bands that predate rage are the aerosmith/run dmc collaboration, public enemy/anthrax collaboration, faith no more, and some of the chilli peppers stuff. But imo Rage were and will always be the kings of that genre, they just kicked way more ass than the rest. Why? Because they were more geniune. Zach is a damn good rapper, much better than any other rock/rappers. I prefer some of his lyrics over some of biggie and tupacs best stuff. Plus he also has a decent voice for some of the angry screams.

The rhythm section of the band is vastly underrated. Brad and I forget the other guys name, are an awesome hard rock/metal drummer and bassists. They keep that shit solid so that zach and Morello can do their things. The simple fact that the drummer plays on Sabbaths new album, proves they have great, heavy chops.

Audioslave is ok, I don't mind them, but all 4 rage albums piss all over the best audioslave albums. They are heavier, meaner, angrier, and just plain better.

IMO these are the best 90's bands

1. Rage against the machine

2. Sublime

3. Pearl Jam

4. Alice in chains

5. Nirvana

Morello's older than Slash, so how can you say he's not from that era? He had every other influence a guitarist from the suburbs who grew up in the early 80s would have had. He moved to Hollywood to try to make it but he had an Ivy League degree that was useless in getting him gainful employment, so he brought along his boom box, turned up "Brick House" and stripped for money.

Aic and Nirvana are the best of that lot by a country mile but Ten is the best album.

Curious, why would you for example rate RATM over Faith No More?

We all have different opinions, which is cool, I just feel rage were far better than faith no more. I grew up with this era, so its close to me. Faith no more were pretty much a one hit wonder, sure they have other good songs, but only one gets radio play. At least thats how it was in the 90's. While Rage were "it" band. They were not as big as gnr were at their peak, but Rage were damn big. Everyone in my high school that liked hard rock liked Rage, well except for Limp Bizkit hooray for tolerance!s. I got into many debates about who was bigger or better Rage or Limp. Even though AIC made good music through out most of the 90's, I would never say they were huge. They were more of a cult band. They probably gained a lot of their fans and following after Layne's death. Same with Sublime, Brad's death completly expanded their audience.

Pearl Jam were heading towards "huge" their first 3 albums are great imo, but then they released the turd known as no code. It completly killed their momentum. Yeild help bring them back, but they were pretty much a cult band after that also.

Truth be told, Nirvana was and will always be the biggest band of the 90's. While I do love them, Nevermind stayed in my cd disk changer for years it felt like. But at this point in my life I am just sick to death of them. I heard all of their songs so many times that I just can't do it anymore. Hell everyone that picked up guitar from 91' on can play some sort of Nirvana. They just are completly over exposed, and their library isn't big enough to keep me interested.

By 94' on (which was when I really became aware of a lot of music) Kurt was dead, pearl jam were working on no code, gnr were breaking up, so it was sort of a transistion time again for music. As great as the whole grunge scene was, it really only lasted for a few years. By 1996, grunge was already dead. Rap/rock and NUmetal is really what took over most of the 90's. And Rage, Tool, and Korn were the 3 kings of that era. I don't mind some of Korn's stuff, but I hate their tunings they use. I hated that about that whole era, everyone tuned way down, and nobody played solos. So bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit never really did much for me.

Tool and Marilyn Manson were both good bands, but they were kings of that whole "goth" thing that was going on back then. While I really do like Tool a lot (seen them in concert twice) I hated that whole goth scene. It was just retarded imo.

So that leaves Rage. Morello's riffs reminded me of zeppelin, which I loved. He played solo's (even though they were different, at least they were solos.) Zach felt like 2pac and Axl rolled into one. I really liked his lyrics a lot. And beyond all that, the first time I heard their first album, I had never heard anything like that at all before. It was so heavy and so powerful. It really blew me away. Honestly that was the last time I've felt that way about a new band.

I guess you had to be there to see and feel the things I felt. It's just my opinion and my observations. But I was a white boy in high school in the USA during this era, so it was something that I shared with a lot of people. I viewed it as a microcosim of what the rest of the country must of been like also. I think europeans viewed this scene and this era differently than us Americans did. It wasn't contrived, it felt very real. Rage were every bit as real as gnr were.
