Randy Lahey Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 (edited) This song gave me a headache. I hope she sings on something again.http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2013/10/04/lauryn-hill-celebrates-prison-release-with-new-song-consumerism/2922073/ Edited October 4, 2013 by Randy Lahey Quote

wasted Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 I think shes got it right once the album comes out well get slab of noise that probably has songs buried in it. It makes sense to make it unlistenable and call it Consimerism. Quote
Randy Lahey Posted October 4, 2013 Author Posted October 4, 2013 (edited) This is what she had to say about the song:Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn’t imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it’s level Edited October 4, 2013 by Randy Lahey Quote

Randy Lahey Posted October 5, 2013 Author Posted October 5, 2013 Team Brazil should try and add Lauryn to their roster of clients. Quote
wasted Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Dre, Lauryn, Axl could do an epic version of Eye of the Tiger. Quote

Guest Len B'stard Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I think with people like Axl and Lolly Hill its worth considering the notion that, y'know, their not putting out music is not like, due to some sort of internal calamity in their camp or whatever and perhaps more to do with the fact that they are very dilettante-ish about it and perhaps really don't care that much for the whole enterprise. dalsh327 Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I think with people like Axl and Lolly Hill its worth considering the notion that, y'know, their not putting out music is not like, due to some sort of internal calamity in their camp or whatever and perhaps more to do with the fact that they are very dilettante-ish about it and perhaps really don't care that much for the whole enterprise.I think they have dreams of stardom but when they get exposed to the business side of it, it doesn't click for some reason and that's when they realize they were being taken advantage of by managers and record companies. It's not slavery as much as it's predatory. "I'm an artist, not a businessman" doesn't fly anymore. They're just going to get ripped off and bitter with that way of thinking. The only way she could have gotten out of taxes is if she married a billionaire or established a religion, but you need lawyers and accountants who know how to work the nonprofit/church exemption angle. I'm sure Mel Gibson had or has a church on his property because he's getting around paying taxes. Pat Robertson is lord of the tax loophole. Quote
wasted Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 (edited) Its more of a top down thing. The labels having been pushing form. That is seen in the generic out put of bands. Even My Chemical Romance, for all the pretensions its very conservative. If it doesnt sound like everything else then they shy away. Its not the 70s when they wait on their knees for Lennon to present his new masterpiece. They are in from the get go with the producer paid to deliver a product. Culture has ended. Its merely lifestyle choices now, all packaged up to be consumed. They might work with Hill or Rose but its more a prestige thing. Maybe they can get it work but they arent counting on it. MB. Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 There was a time Lauryn was really awesome. I really loved her voice. She is like Axl now, one day it's decent, next day it's horrible. But once it was always really good. Quote

J Dog Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 (edited) I forgot she even went to jail, didn't miss her one bit. The Score is about the only thing I dig of hers. Edited October 6, 2013 by J Dog Quote
wasted Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 Axl and Lauryn don't fit into the modern record company business plan. This type of artist should be doing remakes or self parody. Why change a winning formula. And they are right from a business perspective and maybe even consumers. Not many fans complain about the sameiness of Chili peppers or PJ or ACDC. They complain when its not the same. Like st anger or CD. So are they wasting their time? Quote
Forsaken Posted October 6, 2013 Posted October 6, 2013 This was really bad, I tried to like it but... eh... Quote
