Axl says "nothing physical" to Halestorm.

Yep, you read it right. Just spotted this. You may remember Lzzy and Slash doing "Out Ta Get Me" when they opened for Slash overseas. They then recorded it, mentioned here too I believe, and were all set to have it on their new "Re-Animate" covers album. Only one problem, they asked everyone, and I guess thought that everyone asked Axl? Anyway Axl's camp said "ok, only stipulation is not on a physical record, digital only".

Mixed emotions here, I can't say I didn't expect it, and yeah Axl is tough to reach to get permission from, lol.

And before anyone says the inevitable "well he let Sheryl do "SCOM" " let me illustrate the difference. Sheryl, then, sold millions of records. Great up front or back end cash, and not bad having the song make another round to new ears. Halestorm won a Grammy a few months back, I talked about it, but this is a rock band and no rock band sells records now. Note the constant touring these bands (must and hopefully wanna) do.

The Pulse Of Radio asked Lzzy Hale if the band had ever been denied permission to record a song for one of these EPs. "We were denied after the fact, actually, on the last cover EP," she said. "We thought we had gotten approval for "Out Ta Get Me" by Guns and Roses, and apparently everybody had approved it but Axl [Rose] — but nobody told him. So we had recorded it, we released it, and then he found out and I guess — what was the stipulation? We, like, could do it digitally but not physically, which I thought was kind of weird."

What's confusing? They asked, or thought someone else was asking for them, for permission to put the song on a record. Axl said no, he's the only one that did, saying they can only do a digital version. (Itunes)

Dude that's one of the reasons I have mixed emotions, lol. I mean she sings it great, sure, but of the entire illustrious catalog you pick that? It's right up there with having an entire Judas Priest catalog and picking "Dissident Aggressor"! Imagine a band doing that! ...

sigh

I knew Lzzy when she was a kid starting out, so I'm a die hard supporter regardless, but man some of these choices.

I guess I don't get the difference. Why would Axl care if the cover was out there in physical form, but not digital? What am I missing?

I don't know if it has to do with the logistics of the publishing aspects of it all or if it is just Axl's personal preferences

I can't offhand think of a real legitimate reason to have that limitation

Seen as he didn't get notified before its recording, I think he was pretty decent allowing it to be released. He does have ownership of the song along with the other members so it's completely his call how he wants to represent the GnR brand. good cover too!

Great cover by the way! And they (Halestorm) do an even better job live. But Re-Animate is from 2011. For as far as I know, that's before they ever toured and played with Slash and Myles. Slash isn't on the song either. So this (imo) has nothing to do with any Slash vs. Axl thing. Just Axl making a valid claim on a song he has the rights to.

Does GNR make any $ off this? If so that's cool with me.

Sure, if it sells or if it's a big enough band that they can pay a lot up front. Lemmy got paid 100k from Metallica for 4 tunes, said Lemmy in his documentary. (A MUST SEE)

So if the bands in the underground rock world, as it is now in America, they can't offer the up front cash. Instead they have to sell a lot to make cash. Yeah they sell a respectable amount, for rock sales they chart high, so they'd make something. Now though, since Axl said no, it's unreleased so no.

If you remember years back Slash and gang hated Axl as he would not let any of the songs be used commercially, like in commercials. There was a suit I think that he was denying them income by not letting em out. He has come around now, as we see GnR songs used a a lot nowadays. There's a new one with a little kid singing, fabric softeners I believe! Here's others..

Reanimate 2 came out a month or so back, hit the links, like Ragu 'it's in there!"

Yeah, but the whole thing with Out Ta Get Me and Axl was 2011. It's on the first EP. That's not a recent event.

Right, the story is recent as she just told it, but you make a good point here... It is on that 1st record! So now I gotta ask, what the hell is she talking about now?! I guess Atlantic Records got around it? Meanwhile this is the part Blabbermouth quotes in the article, maybe they're confused too.

What's most interesting here is that Axl didn't know about it until it was ready to go. Presumably his camp/lawyers or someone had been approached about it but for some reason didn't tell the man himself. Unless of course the article means Halestorm forgot to ask GnR permission. It's not made terribly clear (like most things).

Ah, fuck that. I think its an underappreciated song and was a good choice to cover.

And Blabbermouth a a habit of covering old news that happened years ago as if it's some breaking update. Few of their writers are a little out of the loop.

Slayer covered that exact Priest song on South of Heaven in the 80s. It kicks ass too.
