estrangedtwat
So an "author" churns out a novel and expects to get the next Dan Brown sized paycheck. Sorry pal. Those days are over. Never gonna happen.Dumbass kids all over the world want to rock stars and snort coke off hot girls' tits and play sold out stadiums. Nope. That's over too."But if we don't stop piracy, studios can't afford to pay the actor's $20 million payheck!" Tough titty. The world we grew up in is over. Information is free now. Music, movies, television programs, books, comic books. Every single song you ever listened to, TV show you watched, book you read...it's available now. Free. All that means is that the small percentage of people that were getting stinking rich off this shit for the last 60 years or so won't get any more money. And there won't be any more mega rock stars or super star authors getting grossly overpaid. Well, there will always be some, but not like before.Oh and all the jobs lost in the entertainment industry due to piracy? Well boo hoo, guess you'll have to work for a living now instead of getting grossly overpaid to run a craft services table for a bunch of rich assholes. It certainly doesn't mean the end of entertainment. There will always be entertainment. But it means instead of watching movies with the same 6 recycled plots starring the same 20 or so people in every movie, we will see movies from a far wider pool of talent. The only industry I see a real bleak future for is porn. Without money, where's the motivation for beautiful women to have sex on camera?

Suffice to say something comes along to replace everything, call centres are the new factory floor for instance.

RussTCB
MP3s sound like shit.Good thing FLAC is around then.I sometimes use FLAC but honestly, MP3 is fine for me when it comes to digital music. When I'm in a position to listen to digital/portable music, fidelity isn't a must a lot of the time.

When I'm in a position to listen to digital/portable music, fidelity isn't a must a lot of the time. I'm in no way an audiophile or music snob myself. Most of my music listening is done through shitty headphones on my phone, so quality isn't that big of an issue. For those with more discriminating tastes like John though, it's a good thing there's FLAC. I suppose with TB+ hard drives being the norm these days, it doesn't make much sense not going with FLAC though, but most of my collection was downloaded when space wasn't so available. John Bonham
I no longer have the time or patience to download FLAC files, convert them, transfer them to CD, blah, blah, blah.I just prefer to buy an official release with a longer-lasting, more durable CD and case, artwork, etc.In the case of Chinese Democracy leaks, of course I download them, but I prefer to buy an official release when it's available.I don't listen to music on an iPod, I have a really good stereo at home and in my car. I like to download music to give it a test run before purchase though, and that way I don't have to risk damaging the physical copy. In my case something always used to happen to the physical copy, so it's the only way I should really be operating.
