Just read through the booklet and saw the lyrics are "Freedom or the chains"... I always thought it was "Free them of the chains".

So did I. Are you sure the booklet is correct?

Hahaha, was going to post the same thing. If you go by the booklet, The Blues lyrics are way worse than most people complain about :D

It's isolated from the mainland like Taiwan?

Madagascar also most polluted island in the world and at one time was a haven for pirates, one of the close by islands is called Reunion (not making this up!)

Or GB in WWII before America joined, although, maybe not since we still had an empire. But GB in Europe...
europe is horrible place full of commie and exisyestilists.

When GNR performed this song at the MTV music awards back in 2002 I was immediately hooked. I was so happy when CD was finally released and this song was on it.

I have seen Axl and GNR perform this song live and it's a very powerful song.

It's one of my all time favorite GNR songs.

Axl sounds great and pulls it off live many years later.

The song is both sad and uplifting too.

The only thing now is since those Madagascar movies, I think of them sometimes when I hear the name. lol

But hey this is a great song.

Madagascar, the word atleast makes me think of the location. It looks different (in an interesting way), and i'm pretty sure many of the creatures that live there cannot be found anywhere else.

that's the question I always wanted to ask Axl

Madagascar is an island, not far from an island called Reunion - some trivia if you didn't know :P

Word! I done looked that up. Réunion is an island next to Madagascar.

Réunion (French: La Réunion), is a French island with a population of 837,868 inhabitants (as of January 2012) located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) southwest of Mauritius, the nearest island.

If he wanted to go for something really isolated he should have used "Bouvet Island" as the name of the song, because that's the most remote island in the world, not Madagascar which isn't particularly isolated at all being rather close to mainland Africa and all. If that's too esoteric who could have gone for "Galapagos". And if he wasn't going for a particularly isolated island then the question remains: why did he choose "Madagascar"? I guess he just likes the word. It's fetching

"Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar (Malagasy: Repoblikan'i Madagasikara [republiˈkʲan madaɡasˈkʲarə̥]; French: République de Madagascar) and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the southeastern coast of Africa. The nation comprises the island of Madagascar (the fourth-largest island in the world), as well as numerous smaller peripheral islands. Following the prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar split from India around 88 million years ago, allowing native plants and animals to evolve in relative isolation."

I thought it was pretty obvious knowing what Madagascar is.

An island? Axl wrote a song and named it after a movie?

Even going through the lyrics, I think it's borderline random that he picked madagascar to be the name.

Not sure what your argument is. Every island sufficiently far away from other islands/mainlands will have restricted gene flow leading to divergent evolution. This is not a phenomena only relevant to Madagascar. My point is that there are lots of islands much more isolated than Madagascar.

Yeah, because 'Bouvet Island' has a good ring to it

I have to say I really don't like the song. I always skip Madagascar, Riad and Scrapped

Me too, along with Sorry, Shacklers, Catcher, IRS, SoD, and Chinese Democracy..

Exactly why I concluded that he must have picked Madagascar because it is a fetching word :D

He could have named it St. Helena where Napolean(the French dude and not Dynamite) was exiled to after his defeat at Waterloo.

That would have been symbolic as well. Once he was kicking ass and defeating the known world..bringing empires to thier knnnnnnneess kneeesss ...then got the shit kicked out of him and exiled where he died on a cold lonley windswept island in the south Atlantic.
