Was Axl affected by the murder of John F. Kennedy?

"Civil War", Use Your Illusion II

And in my first memories

They shot Kennedy

I went numb when I learned to see

So I never fell for Vietnam

Look at the phrase "they shot Kennedy". It just isn't compatible with the establishment's lone gun theory. Axl doesn't say "When Lee shot Kennedy", he specifically says "they". That would insinuate that Axl finds the coup d'etat explanation more plausible--immortalized in films such as Oliver Stone's JFK.

Axl also says that he "learned to see". Again, that would hint towards Axl finding the conspiracy theory more plausible. Most people accept the explanation provided by the government, whereas Axl is saying that through this event he "learned to see".

Moreover, the conspiracy claims that Jack Kennedy disgruntled his generals by adopting a more progressive analysis towards Vietnam. Henceforth, they become part of a tiered plot to assassinate the president. They wanted to sustain the operation in Vietnam, and Lyndon Johnson permitted that.

The Spaghetti Incident?, Live Era and Chinese Democracy were released circa Kennedy's anniversary.

Axl was about 18 months old when JFK was murdered you idiots. I doubt it had any impact whatsoever on him.

Having your first memories aged 6 seems a bit strange.

Surely you'd be affected by commotion aged 2? Or maybe Axl is making a political point as opposed to actual personal experience.

I was 9 years old when the 1976 investigation concluded that there was evidence of a conspiracy and I have had a life long facination wioth the whole phenomenon. Early on I heard the discussions about the huge change that had took place after the assassination.

In 92 while in college I went to Dealy Square in Dallas to do research for my political theory class and I am adament that no single lone nut gunman was able to pull this off...it feeds into my resentment that I feel for the powers that be and is reflected in my fuck you before they fuck you philosophy that Axl and GNR discussed in that era. Many of Gen X feel the same ...that what you feel and experience as news and truth is manufactured in every manner and way.

I really doubt Kennedy´s death affected him since he was what, one year old or so?. Now, that line "I learned to see" might be related to his views ofr feelings on the matter as an adult but that´s mere speculation on our part.

Just want to add, I really believe the CIA is behind Kennedy's death.

The magic bullet theory is a buch of bs imo, but that can be for another time...

But I do agree the kennedy assassination affected people who were around to experience it.

It doesn't affect me, wasn't even alive. Don't think Axl was venting in the song, I think he wanted to make a political statement and he is opinionated about the whole kennedy thing like you and I are.

Was Axl even born then? If he was he had to be very young.

I'm sure when he learned US history it effected him.

I remember that day. I was in Catholic school and they sent us home early. Then that was all that was on tv. Kennedy getting shot and then when Ruby killed Oswald.

Then the funeral. Like I said, I'm not a fan of Kennedy, so now I still don't know why Dallas made a huge deal of his 50th anniversary.

As for Vietnam, it was a war nobody wanted, so people felt the government lied about it.

I knew men who served there and men who lost their lives for fighting in this unpopular war.

From what I learned about Vietnam, France owned it and was the first one fighting there. They left and the US went in. It wasn't actually a war. It was supposed to be the US helping South Vietnam.

I remember seeing the handbook the soldiers got. It said on the first page that the US were guests of South Vietnam and had to respect them and protect them. yeah, horrible things happened, but the US lost a lot of men in that war.

Also the handbook had all the horrible traps the Vietcong had planted all over the land to kill the US soldiers.

I guess being the greatest power in the world, the US has gotten itself in wars and problems it shouldn't have, but like I said, I knew men who served and died during that war, so yeah, it was an unpopular war, but our soldiers fought because they believed in it.

As far as the "wall of deceit" if Axl is talking about the wall that has the names of the fallen soldiers, I don't think his right about it being deceitful. It took long enough for the US government to honor those fallen soldiers who gave their lives for a war we should never have gotten involved in.

They still deserve our respect. Axl was young during the Vietnam war and like I said most people here didn't agree with it, but soldiers are taught to fight and that's their job.

Did you wear black armband when they shot the man who said Peace could last forever and in my first memories they shot Kennedy I went numb when I learned to see So I never fell for Vietnam got the wall in DC to remind us all That you cant trust freedom when its not in your hands When everybodies fighting for thier promised land"

I love those Lyrics..genius and one of the reasons I dug Axl and GNR ....

(compare and contrast Civil War lyrics to Chinese Democracy and Rhiad and you can understandably wonder why the question gets asked WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED to Axls lyric writing capabilities!?)

who was the man who said peace last for ever? Was that MLK?
