All In The Family

It's a rip off of the satirical british sitcom Til Death Us Do Part…and extremely inferior to boot, for the simple reason that American TV back in those days didn't really allow the sort of cutting edge type stuff that made a show like that relevant.

I could not be more wrong, really? You do realise that its an admitted thing, that its a remake of Til Death Us Do Part, don't you? As in its a well known thing, something the writers themselves admit to. The characters, the setting, even entire episodes of Til Death Us Do Part are taken and transplanted over onto All in the Family. Even down to the damn credit sequence, it is literally and purposely a take on Til Death Us Do Part…unless you're saying you know better than the writers of All in the Family.

Produced by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin, the original pilot was entitled Justice for All and was developed for ABC. Tom Bosley, Jack Warden and Jackie Gleason were all considered for the role of Archie Bunker. In fact, CBS wanted to buy the rights to the original British showTill Death Us Do Part and retool it specifically for Gleason, who was under contract to them, but producer Norman Lear beat out CBS for the rights and offered the show to ABC.

They actually had to buy the rights to Til Death Us Do Part cuz they were remaking it stateside, it is THAT much of a take off of it. But i'm SOOOO off base right?

I watched this show all the time. It was ahead of it's time with the shit they would show.

Maude and the and Good Times were two shows that were made because of this show.

also the Jeffersons too. I think Good Times was made from Maude, but anyway, good show.

It showed how times were changing and Archie Bunker was still living in the past.

You're off base about cutting edge and are grossly underestimating the show on its own.

Perhaps but my comments were comparative, i wasn't talking about the show on its own.

I think both shows are good insights to a period of time, but even with both shows being decades old, replace some of the pop culture names and it's still relevant.

The humor in both shows are different, there were less episodes of Til Death even under their different names. I think All in the Family/Archie Bunkers went 15 years total.

Else was less "dingbatty".

Else was extremely dingbatty man, you should check out some more episodes  Quite a few of the episodes are identical though. Also, Alf the character came back in other shows, like In Sickness and in Health. He also did live stand up as Alf. Two films too, of which the second was really weird. There was also another show with Alf in it called just Til Death that ran i think for just the one season in the early 80s. It's the only time i've seen a show with Alf in it that weren't so good.

I dunno if this was the same with All in the Family, it doesn't appear to be by Vals reckoning but what was brilliant about TDUDP was that it was basically political satire and a means by which you could pretty much discuss issues of the day, in a comedic setting and thereby get away with saying things that you probably couldn't otherwise. Alf represents conservative values, Mike represents socialist values, Rita represents women and their changing attitudes of the times. And by way of the satire, no one party really comes off better than the other, it doesn't push the left over the right or the right over the left, it sort of sends them both up really.

In Til Death Us Do Part they were forever discussing current things in the news or current phenomena, pop music, football, politics, medicine, history, all sorts of stuff.

I don't think you could get away with all that coons and sambos and nig-nogs stuff over in America though, not in those days. Not even now actually.

Believe it or not, they had less problems saying racist things on TV than they do now. Archie pretty much covered the spectrum.

I'm glad you've taken the reins on a thread about a show you've only seen "a handful of episodes" from. Thanks for that.

'Taken the reins'? Taking this a bit seriously aren't you? I don't need to've seen every episode for any of the assertions i've made but here, have the 'reins' back
