You've Got 12 Songs, Which Do You Pick?

EDIT: The entry on the Wikipedia page saying that Greatest Hits would be re-released in 2014 has since been deleted. There is no verification anywhere on the Web to prove that statement. Also, this topic has been merged with another topic. Nowhere in my original post did I ask the readers to slim down their choices to 12 songs. If a moderator could change the title of thread to be, "What's your GNR Greatest Hits?", that'd be appreciated. Thank you.

I was just reading on the Wikipedia page for the album and (Although this is probably not true since the grammar is so crudely edited and I can't find any verification of it elsewhere online) that 2004's Greatest Hits would be re-released next year, swapping some of the cuts in favor of Chinese Democracy songs.

Anyways, I know the album has a lot of controversy behind it since Axl, Slash and Matt tried to block Geffen from releasing it. It's not that great of an album either; it doesn't do the band any justice by leaving out a lot of essential tracks (I mean come on, Nightrain isn't on there!). Nonetheless, it's sold over 5 million copies in the US and it's pretty hard to argue with those numbers.

This topic has probably been covered 1000 times prior on this site, but if you could make a new version of GNR's greatest hits to succeed the old one, what would you put on it? Would you include CD songs? I think the band could put out a 2-disc greatest hits without being too taxing of a listen for casual fans.

The track listing for 2004's Greatest Hits is:

1) Welcome to the Jungle

2) Sweet Child O' Mine

3) Patience

4) Paradise City

5) Knockin' on Heaven's Door

6) Civil War

7) Don't Cry (Original)

8) You Could Be Mine

9) November Rain

10) Live and Let Die

11) Yesterdays

12) Ain't It Fun

13) Since I Don't Have You

14) Sympathy for the Devil

From AFD I'd add It's So Easy, Nightrain, Mr. Brownstone and Rocket Queen.

From UYI I I'd add You Ain't the First, Bad Obsession, Dead Horse, Coma and MAYBE Perfect Crime?

From UYI II I'd add 14 Years, Locomotive and Estranged. I'd also replace the studio version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door with the live version from Tokyo '92.

From CD I'd add Chinese Democracy, Better, There Was a Time, IRS and MAYBE Street of Dreams?

I'd also scrap Sympathy for the Devil and not tack on Oh My God.

Taking into account the length of one compact disc, plus what the general public would enjoy and expect based on major radio play it should('ve) be(en):

WTTJ

SCOM

Paradise City

Patience

Used TO Love Her

Civil War

You Could Be Mine

Don't Cry

Live & Let Die

Knocking on Heavens Door

November Rain

Yesterdays

Estranged

Since I Don't Have You

Essentially, Ain't it Fun & Sympathy should've been swapped for UTLH and Estranged. Practically speaking, since Greatest Hits albums are for the general public songs like OMG and stuff off CD just don't necessitate cutting out original gnr songs.

Now if it was a double album it'd be a different story..

I think if a new Greatest Hits were to be released, it should be a comprehensive double album. Something with all of the hits, but all of the important album tracks too. Appeals to both the more hardcore and casual fans because it's good music all around.

Why?

Civil War was on the other hits and hasnt been played live as much as Madagascar.

HD and Live are covers.

Im not sure which CD songs but if u are going to add them those go down well live, only gauge we have.

Nightrain was single.

I think in 2013 this is the GH 2.

by adding chinese songs its obvious they are trying to promote the album...everyone has heard cd on the radio...why not there was a time?

and this i love is questionable.... prostitute is a better choice

I'd use a two disc grandiose format for this with a big thick box and a thick booklet.

Includes a written foreword by Axl Rose along with a paragraph or so regarding each song, from the man himself.

Disc 1 (Singles):

01. Welcome to the Jungle

02. Sweet Child O' Mine

03. Paradise City

04. It's So Easy

05. Patience

06. Nightrain

07. You Could Be Mine

08. Don't Cry

09. Live And Let Die

10. November Rain

11. Knockin' On Heaven's Door

12. Yesterdays

13. Civil War

14. Ain't It Fun

15. Estranged

16. Chinese Democracy

Disc Two (Non Singles)

17. Mr. Brownstone

18. Rocket Queen

19. One In A Million

20. Perfect Crime

21. The Garden

22. Dead Horse

23. Coma

24. Breakdown

25. Locomotive

26. So Fine

27. Hair of the Dog

28. Oh My God

29. Better

30. There Was A Time

31. Catcher in the Rye

32. This I Love

like I said if you are going to add CD songs…it's really hard to say in this era, what rock songs have been hits? Chi dem topped the rock charts or something.

like I said I'd go with the ones got more love live. SOD is a little more of a tune than the epics like TWAT, Catcher, Prostitute (save them for the Best of)

Better is the obvious one, TIL pretty much sounds like GNR to anyone, goes down well live. Madagascar also played a lot live over the years, it's a little more concise, if not a bit more accessible to the casual listener.

I can't see the point in putting out another GH of the same tracks. Maybe a 2 cd Best of would really cover things better.

Then you jiggle the tracks around like they do live you have a pretty interest rock cd.

Chinese Democracy

Welcome to the Jungle

Sweet Child O Mine

You Could Be Mine

Estranged

Better

This I Love

Street of Dreams

November Rain

Nightrain

Madagascar

Don't Cry

Patience

Paradise City

You've added Brownstone and Estranged for Sympathy and Ain't it Fun.

Seems fair, once you've done what needs to be done there's hardly many choices left.

Maybe Nightrain is bigger GNR song than Since I don't have you.

Then it's a choice between Easy and Brownstone or Rocket Queen.

It was put out as a single and charted I think. I think that's how the label decided on sales or chart position. Even Sympathy charted. Not sure about Easy or Nightrain. Whereas Brownstone was never a single so wouldn't.

I think Ain't it Fun was top 10 in the UK.

Dead Horse, Garden of Eden, The Garden had some kind of single releases.

I was listening to those 3 songs last night Symptahy, Since, Aint it Fun - sound pretty good!
