liers Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Shinedown’s acoustic covers album was put on hold after Bon Jovi refused to let them release a version of Wanted Dead Or Alive.Frontman Brent Smith and guitarist Zach Myers revealed plans earlier this year to record ten of a set of tracks chosen by fans, including material by the Clash, Phil Collins and Metallica. But Myers says they ran into problems when getting clearance to put the record on sale.He tells This Is Not A Scene: “It was going to come out and it was going to be no problem. It looks really cool, sounds really cool, and then we wanted to release it as an album too.“That’s when you get into publishing – you have to get permission. And two of the artists were like, ‘We don’t like anyone covering our songs.’ I’m not going to say who… Bon Jovi… and so that was kind of that.”But he adds: “We’re trying to figure it out right now. It should be all cleared up – it will be out soon.”The confusion hasn’t spoiled Myers’s enjoyment of making the album over two days. “It was so much fun,” he says. “Brent‘s such a good singer – I love hearing him sing songs that aren’t ours.“Nothing Else Matters by Metallica took three takes. Everything else was like one take or two takes. We did In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins. We didn’t rehearse it, I just kind of started playing, and he started singing it, and it became this kind of special moment. It’s really, really cool.”The full tracklist is:01. Sitting On the Dock Of The Bay – Otis Redding02. Wanted Dead Or Alive – Bon Jovi03. London Calling – The Clash04. In The Air Tonight – Phil Collins05. Runaway Train – Soul Asylum06. Black – Pearl Jam07. Blue On Black – Kenny Wayne Shepherd08. Someone Like You – Adele09. She Talks To Angels – The Black Crowes10. Nothing Else Matters – Metallicahttp://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/bon-jovi-blocked-shinedown-covers-album/Shinedown is such a popular band, I can't see why Bon Jovi would have a hard time with it. They'll get a good chunk of royalties. Quote
RussTCB Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Hmm.... could be one of those things where a manager, label person or lawyer said no and Jovi doesn't even know about it. Quote
bran Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 im all for never having another shinedown album released. 4 Quote

AxlisOld Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Probably because Shinedown's singer is way more talented than Jon ever was. 1 Quote
chevelle Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) Bon Jovi? Turning down money? Nah, someone else must've goofed. Edited December 19, 2013 by chevelle Quote
Raz0r Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Or maybe Jon just thinks Shinedown sucks. The guy gets a lot of shit about only caring about money, but here he is turning it down and it could very well be for artistic reasons. Quote
Raz0r Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (Classic Rock) Shinedown frontman Brent Smith and guitarist Zach Myers will release their fan-powered covers ten-track album as a six-track EP after they failed to secure release permission from every artist they'd originally included.Fans had chosen the list of songs to be recorded acoustically but Myers last month confirmed that Bon Jovi were amongst those unhappy with the project, and wouldn't let them use a cover of Wanted Dead Or Alive. The plan was for each song to be accompanied by a video and Smith says that's where problems arose. He explains: "Some of the artists were cool with letting us put them up on YouTube and show the video of the song being records. Some weren't cool with the video, and that's totally their decision."Along with the Bon Jovi song, Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight, Pearl Jam's Black and Adele's Someone Like You won't appear. The pair still hope those covers can be released in audio only over the coming months.Read more at http://www.antimusic.com/dayinrock/#kd1dR6CSoWF8daAI.99So it wasn't the cover Jovi objected to, and Jovi wasn't the only band that had a problem with what they were doing. Pretty lame of Myers for singling them out last month. Quote
mrandyk Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Someone, I'm not going to say who...Shinedown...is putrid shit and should disband. Quote

moreblack Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Probably because Shinedown's singer is way more talented than Jon ever was. He's good, but I can't name a single song he's done other than that Skynyrd cover. Quote

metallex78 Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I guess Bon Jovi don't want their good songs to be tarnished with lame cover recordings from lame bands like Shinedown.Look at the tracklisting... I'm all for showing respect to your influences, but why bother re-recording other band's biggest hits, when there is no way in hell these guys would do them better. Quote
Johnny Drama Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Uh what's wrong with the track listing? Quote

The album version though, especially in the context of the record, is great.I have no interest in hearing him oversing Bon Jovi songs though, and the 2-3 songs I've heard from these sessions sound exactly as I imagined they would. No thanks. Quote

What could Shinedown covers of those songs possibly add to already great songs???They should've gone for more obscure songs if they were confident enough. And regardless of whether or not I think Shinedown suck, thats pretty fucking cocky of them to cover big hit songs by other bands and try to release them as their own versions (which will no way better the originals in my opinion) Edited January 29, 2014 by metallex78 Quote
Johnny Drama Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Or they simply wanted to show admiration for a bunch of bands they liked a la Spaghetti and Garage Inc? Don't get me wrong, I hate Shinedown but there is something truly disgusting about banda ripping on other bands that admire them or consider them an influence. Quote

metallex78 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 My argument is Shinedown's CHOICE of songs, not the fact that they are recording cover songs to begin with.On albums like Spaghetti and Garage Inc, the songs covered were generally lesser known tracks by the artists, not the big hits. Which is exactly my point - why cover an already great song unless you're gonna do something new or better with it?And chances are, if the song is already great, it doesn't need covering, especially from a second-rate band like Shinedown...I'm on Bon Jovi's side with this one. If I was them, I wouldn't want one of my popular world-loved songs tarnished by this band recording it either. Quote
J Dog Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I wouldn't say I hate Shinedown, but you can look at that tracklist and pretty much know exactly how every one of those songs would sound. Quote
