Snooker

Snoo-ker

or in AE, Snook-er

The game Snooker; Invented in India by the British army stationed out there; or something.

Local (for me) legends include Jimmy White... Erm... Maybe more.

The highest score you can get from break is 147.

The table is big and the cues are long for it.

Also, the tip is small, I think; IDK.

In the UK, there was even a song about it.

Who's heard of snooker?

I love snooker. Used to play all the time, highest break was about 35. I used to go watch the Welsh open in Newport and met Jimmy white. Probably the most famous person Ive met.

(apart from Princess Di but she doesn't count as I didn't really meet her I just was just one of several dozen primary schoolkids peering through a bush at her when she opened up a Barnardos center near my school)

Whilst the other instance involving primary school children where you peered through a bush resulted in your first 5 stretch

He was safe. Had a pint of Guinness and a fag on the go this was back in the 90's when smoking in a leisure centre didn't seem strange :D

Snooker is for wankers who use words like 'whilst'... jk :)

It's a good game and tough!

After having a few frames of snooker we used to play pool for a bit and after playing on them big tables with smaller pockets, smaller heavier balls pool was ridiculously easy. You look at the pros in snooker and they make it look easy but its an exceptionally hard game and to get to even a very average standard takes many years of playing a few times a week. I played from about 12 to 18 regularly and less regularly from then on and I can get a break of 35 if i'm lucky.

Compare that to Ronnie O Sullivan who made a 147 maximum break in under 5 minutes and that blows my mind. Some people find it boring to watch but I love the way that each shot has to be near enough perfectly judged to be able to get the white ball positioning right and build a break.

Its not so much about potting but getting the ball in a position for the next 3 or four shots. And when you see the top players making all them decisions and thinking 5/6 shots ahead of themselves in milliseconds its very impressive.
