He isn't one and never has been and, as far as i know has never claimed to be.

People seem to be getting hung up on that word in particular. I was just trying to convey the idea that alot of people believe that Axl was somehow the mastermind, the driving force behind GnR...maybe he was...but my point was simply that if Axl was so great and so talented then why did the band decline rather than progress as he gained more control/influence.
In my opinion, Axl is great and very talented. He chose to take GN'R in a different musical direction which says to me he thought he/GN'R was more than what they were known for. To take that risk takes belief and guts as what they had was working big time.

Unfortunately to achieve this he put himself above everyone else in the band when it was the band as a collective that was genius.

In my opinion the effort should have been put in preserving that rather than creating something else, but at the same time it is Axl's life and if having complete musical autonomy and freedom to express himself was more important then what can you do?

Sure it's Axl's life, but having "complete autonomy and freedom" and being in a band are kinda mutually exclusive. If he wanted autonomy and freedom why didn't he leave to pursue a solo career...perhaps the rest of the band could have continued on with another singer or with Izzy/Duff on vocals. Of course, he eventually got what he wanted after everyone else left...an Axl solo career with a revolving door of hired guns who are GnR in name only. But can you imagine Robert Plant or Ozzy during their solo careers putting together a band and then calling it Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath?

I had an epiphany today about this question and came to the conclusion that Axl is actually a genius of sorts if you think about it..........How many other musicians could completely drive away all the other original band members, release one mediocre album in close to 20 years, tour basically the same set list year after year for the last 13 years, refuse go on stage on time or communicate with his fans and still keeps getting suckers to go to his concerts outside the U.S every tour?.....what other business could treat their customers so shitty and still make money?......I'm thinking there must some genius in there somewhere.....

You are implying madness, not genuis.

However, the fans like Axl singing like Mickey Mouse?

So who are we to judge at the eccentric mad fans that follow a mad genius who sings like Mickey Mouse
