NLRB rules Northwestern University athletes qualify as employees

Recommended Posts

A big ruling from the regional NLRB that could potentially change college sports: http://voices.suntimes.com/sports/report-college-athletes-association-wins-case-before-nlrb-2/

Northwestern will appeal to the full NLRB board. Also, the NLRB only affects private universities when it comes to unionizing and collective bargaining, but the key part is the "employees" part of the ruling anyways. Honestly, not sure how I feel about this, as I'm not sure where this will lead college sports. Can imagine seeing an even bigger separation between the P5 and the other conferences, especially if this eventually ends up impacting the NCAA's governing ability or even its existence. The employee/union process still has a long way to go, but this was a big victory for the athletes. Just not sure where this would leave college athletics, particularly for mid-majors and smaller schools, if the ruling is upheld and the process continues down the road.
