Why is male circumcision so common in USA?

Something that Christians picked up from Judaism that never went away. America has large Christian population (obviously) and while it's not common to have done for purely religious purposes today, there is shoddy evidence at best used to convince parents it is a medically sound decision because it's a traditional Christian value ingrained in the culture.

I'm not sure if circumcision happened as a way to identify a tribe, or because hygiene wasn't all that great, they did it because a lot of guys weren't keeping that area clean. I'm sure it predates Judaism and was thrown into the Bible because they considered it a big deal.

I too have read that it was originally done because of hygienic reasons. Unclean genital area/foreskin plus sand and dirt pretty much equals nasty infections. But in today's world there's really no need for it. And female circumcision (read: genital mutilation) has never been needed.
