How far we have fallen - The VMA's

Recommended Posts

How far has the GNR community fallen?

I remember years ago when a month before the VMA's we would already have topics up about GNR making a surprise appearance and kicking off round 2 with new music.

Now, just 48 hours before the event we have all accepted seemingly that new music is never coming and GNR is now irrelevant.

How did Axl let this happen as I suspect no one after the VMA's in 2002 could ever have predicted this is where the new band would end up.

Now that you mention it its true, we rarely get those topics where I rembember we used to get those rumors for any major music event every year. I think we have finally caught on and have gotten more realistic about the state of GNR

Plus the VMA's suck nowadays anyway, GNR would be a fish out of water at that event

It's precisely partly due to that performance, and the so called "round 2" that has fans in the state they are today.

The people that were fans, were gonna love it no matter what they did, just like some defend Rio 2011 and Bridge School Benefit.

But the casual listener that watched that 2002 VMA thing, probably went "WTF? that's GNR? No."

There's still 186 users on the forum right now, not bad in my opinion especially considering the band members have made it clear that they're temporarily on hiatus from GNR.

Also VMA 2002 gets undeserved shit, personally I thought it was awesome seeing GNR perform on TV for the first time in I don't know how long. There was Axl, Buckethead and company live on TV, and I was fucking psyched. Finally Chinese Democracy Starts Now!!! It didn't of course, but in that moment seeing them on TV, as a GNR fan I absolutely loved it.

To be honest, I remember how pissed I was as a kid when Jethro Tull beat Metallica for the Grammy.

I just kept thinking they were so old and past it and why not just get out of the way.

Who would not say that about GNR in 2014? This version of GNR, especially.

Ian Anderson was 42 when they won.

Crest of a Knave wasn't a bad album at all.

Super Bowl is just around the corner!

Read yesterday the the NFL is going to try and charge artists a fee to play the half time show or they are going to take a percentage of sales whether it be album sales, itunes or touring sales for a set amount of time after the Super Bowl.

There reasoning is the artists are getting free advertising by playing the half time show for the millions watching. They broke down the amount of time the half time show is on which is usually around 8-9 minutes which is 18, 30sec commercial slot which is $4 million times 18= $72 million dollars for the 9 minute performance. They actual put that in the article, my numbers may not be exact but they are close to what I read.

They are not going to ask that amount to play the half time show but they want money up front and/or a percentage of the performers sales after the Super Bowl for a set amount of time

They want a half time show so why should the artists pay.

The NFL doesn't pay the artist for the half time show now, which I think is fair given the exposure but to make them pay for something the NFL wants is insane.

I am sure the amount of viewers for half time show is not even close to those who are watching the game and commercials during it.

I don't know, there seem to a be a lot of young people (myself included) into older music. I mean when I saw The Stones last year there were tons of young people and the first few rows at a Robert Plant show last month were pretty much just young people. I think the culture's changed a bit regarding older acts, possibly because none of the big rock acts these days seem to be playing heavy rock music like Guns and Zeppelin so in some ways you have to look back. I mean there are some great new hard rock acts out there, RIval Sons being a great example but they're not as big as the less heavy crazily big bands.

Alas I think the general consensus amongst rock fans who aren't big GN'R fans is that Axl is past it though. I mean after I went to Reading 2010 which I thought was a truly phenomenal show (bar the power being cut!) I was saying to my friends how awesome it was. Then the BBC showed some of Guns set and they were really negative about it, mainly due to how Axl looked. I guess there'll always be a section of rock fandom that will forever be hating on Axl for not putting the old band back together. Just like people that always hate on Plant for not getting back with Zeppelin.

I still can't believe they never put on a good, highly distributed performance on American TV. They had so many chances. Imagine if the GNR from Rock am Ring had been on the VMAs. Or the GNR from the 2010 Canada tour.

Axl picks the worst times to be shit.

You obviously don't remember the horrendous backlash after the 2002 VMA's. The performance was a disaster and NuGNR were dead in the water before they had even begun.

If Axl would release a new album then I'm sure he would get an invite. Similar to 2006 where I imagine he was asked to play a new song from the album...not just introduce the killers.

If Axl releases a new album I believe his voice will be in great shape. He seems to go the extra mile to get vocals right when he's ready to release a record.

MTV is not what it was in 2002. The focus changed to shit. The VMA's nowdays is the essence of shit. People care even less about new Guns now, then they did back when Axl showed them why they need to care less.

02 VMAs were awesome fuck the haters :hahafyou: its the first time I saw GNR

The band was great, and I liked how Axl sang Madagascar. Heartfelt. But it was a bad performance all around cause Axl was out of breath and the whole world was watching.

The VMA's have fallen WAAAAAY further. It's just an advertisement by artists to tell fans when to torrent their albums.

So it has more to do with the VMA's being shit than it does the band? I don't disagree the show isn't what it used to be. But the real problem with Guns not playing isn't because of the show.
