Not better then Led Zeppelin or Sabbath.Definitely better than Kiss, I'd probably agree better than Aerosmith. I like Purple better than I like Sabbath, and I think overall DP's discog is better, but there's definitely a reasonable argument there. And Zeppelin? C'mon Diesel. moreblack
I'd take Purple over Sabbath as well. Sabbath overall had one gimmick that worked for them. The heavy slow stuff, other than that they really had nowhere to go.Purple had almost no limits.Concerto with an Orchestra? yes they were the first. Warped completely repurposed covers? yes the original lineup was amazing at those. Scintillating virtuoso instrumentals? Not only in the studio, but live their jams would turn into incredible displays of the musicians' chops. Sabbath could only try to replicate their studio efforts and took no chances.Player for player, Blackmore could play rings around Iommi, same for Paice/Ward, and Ozzy could only dream of hitting the notes Gillan could hit, add Jon Lord and that gave them extra depth and someone that could trade solos with Blackmore on an equal footing. There was just so much more to Purple than being heavy and loud, even though they held the record for being the loudest band on earth at one point. I prefer Deep Purple.

Especially considering the same people who'd be influenced by Sabbath, would most likely pick up on what Purple did too.

At least, it was something totally new. Menacing, dark, hellish sound. There was nothing quite like it. It sits at the center of the most important bands in that genre. Sits on the throne if you will.Purple had a better guitar player, a better singer, better everything, but as a whole, Sabbath did so much. Purple too, it's just Sabbath wrote the book really. Not alone, but a big fuckin' chunk of it. I think it's close, but I'll give the edge to Sabbath. Edited September 12, 2014 by Rovim

Dio sang for Blackmore's Rainbow, and then went on to front Sabbath, Bob Daisley also played in Rainbow and would go on to co-write most of the Rhoads era Ozzy stuff, Ian Gillan fronted Sabbath at one point, and had Sabbath playing Smoke On The Water at the encores. MK3 Purple bassist Glenn Hughes did some work with Iommi, Don Airey who did keyboards for Ozzy is now the keyboard player for Purple. Broskirose
Deep Purple is just bad music.lol trent There's a guy named Trent in Deep Purple?Trent likes Deep Purple lol Does he? And who the fuck cares? I liked Deep Purple when I was 10. Hush, Highway Star, etc etc. They're just guitar/keyboard shred bullshit. They couldn't write a legit good tune if they tried. Lynyrd Skynyrd aren't bloody fucking awful like Deep Purple so they win by default. And they've got some solid tunes. They're not innovators or exceptionally good musicians or anything of the sort. But sometimes it's just a good time to play some Skynyrd or Allman Bros on a roadtrip and that's more than you can see for fartrock like Deep Purple. DP are the pinnacle of old cuntrock.

Broskirose
Is your default to just say "try harder" or "lol trent" whenever you can't make a point? Deep Purple is just bad music. Like seriously, does anyone here in this thread actually listen to Deep Purple for fun? Like do you ever go "gee willikers I think I'll listen to some good old Deep Purple today." No, of course not. They're just a legacy band. No one fucking listens to them. When I was in Florida the other week I ate at the Hard Rock and Deep Purple were playing there that night. Some dude offered tickets for like $10 and no one was going for it. I briefly considered buying them for like two seconds and then realized that I'd rather go back to my hotel and read A Game Of Thrones then watch Deep Purple. So I didn't. I'd be surprised if anyone showed up. Besides a few 12 year olds learning the Smoke on the Water riff when they first get a guitar no one gives a shit. I mean it's fucking Deep Purple. No one cares. No one. Edited September 12, 2014 by Broskirose
