Obesity and politics

She's a woman with a very busy career and doesn't have the time for a healthy lifestyle.

Are you kidding me? She's the Minister of Health. That excuse goes for most people. Shouldn't part of her job be promoting healthy lifestyles for busy people?

Haha, you're right, the way you quoted me, the quote fits me perfectly

She's only been the minister of Health for two days, but it's safe to say she won't change. To me, her doing a good job is more important than her being healthy. But I get what you're saying and you are right. If she really wanted to, she could live healthier. Not everyone with a lousy metabolism and a busy career is morbidly obese.

Image matters. We can whine all day about how it shouldn't - and we'd still be mostly wrong - but it matters. She is the (fat) face of Health for your country. Part of doing her job well is setting an example. She automatically fails.

Minister of Budget Files for Bankruptcy for Third Time, Blames Math.

Funny you should say that. Flemishminister of Budget said a few years ago: 'No, I can count. 117 million, for those that can count, the sum of 72 million and 35 million. I can count.' Silence.

And here's our secretary of Pensions from a few years ago in the Senate. (He's dead now. He's French speaking, but speaks Dutch here, very badly.)

So I think Maggie's a huge asset for our image.

I think she's always been overweight. She's a woman with a very busy career and doesn't have the time for a healthy lifestyle. It's a mixture of metabolism and not living healthy, I think.

A low metabolism or even hyperthyroidism won't make you look like that unless you stuff your face like there was no tomorrow without exercising. She is fat because she likes eating and dislikes exercising, pure and simple. There are a lot of people who I'm sure are just as busy or even busier, yet none of them are the size of the Hindenburg.

Of course she likes to eat (a lot) and most probably doesn't exercise. I'm not disputing that, but I'm sure metabolism is a factor as well. That's all :shrugs:

In any case, what does it matter at all if she's fat as long as she does the job as good as it possibly can be done? Set an example? Honestly, how many of you look at your ministers and view them as role models?

I once had a PE teacher who had a beer belly and chain smoked. Best gym teacher I ever had. He let us play sports we enjoyed every week, like football, floorball and similar things. No boring basketball, volleyball or dancing for a whole year. It was great.

Minister of Mobility Housebound for Past Decade.

Sorry, we haven't had any funny ministers of Mobility (yet)

But seriously, in the case of Chris Christie. If he was the most suitable candidate in your opinion, you would vote for him, right ? I mean, you wouldn't not vote for him because he's obese, would you ?

lol voting. I don't vote for any of those blowhards.

My problem with your fat woman is that her job is related to health specifically. President is a different thing. I wouldn't vote for Christie for a number of reasons, none of which have anything to do with his weight.

Okay, that's fair. But please don't call her my fat woman.

An ophthalmologist can't wear glasses?

Is she a doctor? If so, I understand you ... she should be a good example, fighting against obesity and unhealthy lifestyles.

As a minister, she should make good politics. That's it.

If you are talking about her look, well ... it bothers me more, when I see those politicians smoking and drinking like horses, getting their teeth completely brown, not bothering about how they look miserable when they have to make public speeches.

To be a good minister, that woman have to be a good political manager, not a top model.

She's a doctor, yes. And our new minister of Health. It's not a question of looks, it's a question of health. Some say you wouldn't want a chainsmoker as a minister of Health, so you shouldn't have a morbidly obese person either. Both are unhealthy. I don't really mind that she's fat, as everyone seems to agree she's a good, hardworking politician. I find that more important, but I get why people have an issue with it.

She reacted brieflly to the tweet yesterday, saying it is a non-issue for her.

The Mayor of London wants to ban takeaways/fast food from being sold nears schools.

My secondary school was near a McDonald's and a Pizza Hut, so I wonder what they're going to do about that.

Probably ban your secondary school on reflection.

So ... are those people saying that unhealthy people should stop working? Btw ... who told them she's unhealthy? ... just because she's obese doesn't mean that she can't do her job properly.

It bothers me more corrupt, liar, incompetent politicians than fat politicians ... but, that's just me ...

Here in Portugal we have good looking and healthy Prime Minister and vice-Prime Minister. If belgian people want, they can take them both to Belgium and send that fat lady to Portugal ... but, they should be carefull with their pockets ...

If she's a good, hardworking politician and people still bitch about her weight, those people deserve to be governed by politicians like we have around here.

Let's start with a question for the Belgians before crazy takes over. What is her job exactly? What is she expected to do as Minister of Health? For example, does she have a major role in promoting healthy living, eating and lifestyles? If not, then maybe no big deal. If so....

I suppose that would be a part of it. I'm struggling to think of an example where the government promotes healthy living and eating. Maybe in schools, but I think that would be up to the department of Education ? She wants to reform hospitals, that's the first thing I've heard from her as a Health minister. I think she'll be good actually. She obviously knows a lot about healthcare, as a health professional and that's all I can ask for, really.

Of course, we don't have the obesity problems (yet) like you have in the US. So maybe it's a more senstive subject there.I don't know. I mean, I can see the irony of her being Health minister, but I don't think there's anyone really that thinks she shouldn't be the Health minister because she's fat.

Holland used to have a fat Health minister (Terpstra) too, apparently, and no one said anything about that at the time.

As a Health Minister she have to manage the available resources regarding the Belgian Health Public System (If there's one).

Is ridiculous to think that a Minister should go to the TV showing everybody how healthy she is "look at me kids, do you like my body? you should eat your soup and vegetables, just like me"

Reform hospitals how? Have more doctors on call for quadruple bypass surgery?

No, specialist hospitals instead of general hospitals, since you're asking.
