Guns n Roses 80's interviews - youtube

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, have you seen these? Link to no 1 (of 5) below. There is really great stuff in there, a fair bit of which I hadn't seen before, it's like this guy pieced together every MTV appearance from the decade into five videos.

A couple of thoughts:-

  • We hear Steven talk (pre-alcohol/drug abuse), he seemed pretty cool and articulate (a rarely held view I would imagine).
  • How much Axl loved the band, and Slash, I think it must hurt him how things currently are.
  • Guns N' Roses were always destined to be a star that burned bright but for a short period.
  • How most of the band were unfortunately probably dispositioned to become alcoholics (they are completely wasted in most/all tv appearances in these clips). I think it would be considered shocking if this were set in the period of today.
  • How often Axl talks over/interrupts people, I think it's just the way he is though and is accepted, it didn't seem to bother the band much.
  • How much of a talent Axl was.

If you think you've seen bits (or how it starts off), keep with it, i'd be surprised if there wasn't anything new in there for anyone).

Yeah, I've watched them all.

I love how Axl and Slash looked and sounded like a real "couple", with all these internal jokes and those cute little fights during the interviews. It's fun to listen and watch their body language. They were clearly meant for each other....

Early 90's, but I love this one bc he kinda gives you details into how he wanted to shows to become.

- after illusions released he wanted to do 3 hour shows, and dial in a setlist.

- he didn't care for not having a setlist.

-he wanted new stage lights and to make the show less chaotic and more professional.

It's interesting bc he kinda did this with NuGNR. I know we hate the set list situation right now but the shows at the end of 09 where he did a 3 hour show and played everything from the new album made me think he kinda accomplished his dream for how he wanted the show to be.

Also I imagine Axl and Slash disagreed on this aspect. Slash probably enjoyed the lack of organization during the shows while Axl wanted something a lil less rock n roll and a little more professional.

It's just strange because very few people bring this interview up. But it kinda foretold Axl's vision for the future of GNR.
