Food from around the world

What are your favorite ethnic foods?

I live in the United States, and where I came from there have been tons of different cultures so I've tried a lot of cool things.

My favorite is Japanese. I love sashimi, nigiri, maki, etc. I also am currently really digging Ethiopian food

This is what Ethiopian food looks like, Its usually veggie or meat stews and you eat it with the bread.

Never tried Ethiopian. I have tried a lot of North African food, Moroccan etc.

My favourites are Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian.

I once made an Argentinean locro.

Chinese, Thai, and Italian are all awesome, too

Never had Argentinean, North African, and Moroccan. I'd like to

Not a foodie at all. When I travel, food is the very last thing I consider. For some people I know, they'll base their travels on what reservations they can get at certain restaurants.

Spanish food is decent, I like the little tapas. Not a fan of Japanese food whatsoever. Love fish, just need it cooked. Australian food was actually pretty decent (Kangaroo is very tasty). Not a huge fan of Indian food, though I enjoyed eating sea food while i was in Goa, India. My favourite variant of Chinese is Szechuan.

Well I made the Argie dish. It is this huge meat casserole . Make sure you have a lot of diners over if you decide to make it!

Spanish food is a favourite of mind. Cannot believe I forgot that.

I just love ethnic food in general. I don't even know if I can pick a favorite, though I know Turkish, German, Japanese, and Irish are among my favorites. I've rarely tried a new ethnicity of food that I didn't particularly care for.

Don't get me wrong, I love American food too, but 9 times out of 10 I'll take ethnic food first.

Agree! Although a good steak and cheeseburger is always nice

I could eat nothing but unagi nigiri all day, and it would be glorious. There's a place about 4 blocks from where I live that makes the best sushi, and more specifically the best BBQ eel, in the city. Now I'm craving eel.... as I sit here, eating spicy thai style chow mein with prawns, chicken and pulled pork.

I'm really picky about my food, though. It's not about taste, or heat or anything, it's all about texture. So, food with lots of onions and peppers and stuff, is horrible to me, unless they're cut really fine.

Ate at Iron Chef Morimoto's restaurant today. I only got 2 items but I was very unimpressed. Generally I love Japanese and Chinese food though.

Which restaurant?

I ate at a place in Chicago called Japanoise a few years ago. It was really good, but not the best. The atmosphere was more impressive than the sushi (it was GOOD sushi, just not worth the price). I looked it up this year, and it seems like Morimoto is involved with it.

Still digesting kilo of meat from Brazilian churrascaria earlier.

Loved parrilla/asado meat in Argentina.

Iranian will probably always be my favourite (for main courses, for desserts English is my favourite, some Scottish desserts like cranachan I'm fond of as well).

Indian and Bangladeshi are great.

Like Thai but eat it pretty rarely.

Proper Chinese can be a little bizarre but tasty all the same.

I like Japanese but the places in UK are overpriced and stingy with portions, would love to go to Japan and eat regional cuisine in various places.

Lebanese/Levantine cuisine is delicious (shawarma, falafel, etc.).

Love Turkish (proper doner, iskender kebap, ayran, stuffed aubergines...).

Think British food is underrated, especially because most of what you get served in chain pubs is awful, properly prepared black pudding, haggis, Cumberland sausages, Sunday roast, etc., all lovely.

I like Tex-Mex but don't think I've ever had authentic Mexican food, will need to rectify that at some point.

And God Bless America's perfection of the burger.

Shit, forgot French, one of my favourite cuisines! Entrecote, Steak tartare, moelleux au chocolat, raclette...

Italian's great too but I've cut down a lot on pasta and pizza past few years so I haven't had as much...

With Spanish I think I've just had tortillas (the egg kind), paella, and chorizo, all tasty.

Really want to try Portuguese francesinhas, they look delicious.

It's called...Morimoto  I think there's a few of them but I went to the Philadelphia one. I got the Morimoto Tempura (basically a tempura sampler with 3 neat sauces) and arctic char with a watercress puree and a honey soy vinaigrette. Neither were impressive, but I'm not doubting the place, it's supposed to be really good. I think I just chose poorly (i basically got the cheapest items)

Oh man, I've wanted more Iranian food ever since you took us to that Iranian place last summer. Legitimately one of the best meals I've ever had!

I'll be going to that same restaurant again this Saturday! Probably my favourite restaurant in London, Iranian or otherwise, though this Brazilian place tonight was great as well. There's a few highly-regarded British cuisine restaurants in this area but they're all pretty upmarket/expensive, 2-3x (£40-60 a head vs £20-25) as much per person as that Iranian restaurant. I went to a chippie near Waterloo that got good reviews, it was alright but not as good as the fish n' chips I had at a few places when I was up in Scotland by the coast (place in Anstruther near St Andrews is quite famous for its fish n' chips). While I'm spoilt for ethnic restaurants in my area most of the pubs are part of the Taylor Walker chain which means they serve pretty much the same meals out of a box shoved into a microwave, shame there's so few lower-priced/mid-market independent British restaurants :/

My grandma makes good khoresh but I get so sick of it

Blasphemy! How could one ever get sick of a grandmother's cooking?!

Went to a decent one in Paris once as well, can't remember the name. There's a lot in London, most are pretty average/crap, but there's a couple of really good ones right by my flat.

Favourite khoresht is fesenjoon (making it tomorrow night for my aunt and sister), then ghormeh sabzee, gheimeh-bademjan, khoresht ahloo...

Tahchin and zereshk polow are my favourite rice dishes.

I used to hate Iranian desserts as a kid (that saffron ice-cream always tricked me when I thought it was vanilla), now I've acquired a taste for it, but I still wouldn't choose it over Western desserts.

I still need to try Chicago deep-dish pizza!

Oh man, saffron and rose- water ice cream is the best! And my favorite Persian dish (besides the kebobs) is shirin polo. Yum!

I had Chicago pizza in Chicago last week and have one in my freezer

Didn't even get to go to Brooklyn brief time I was in NY. I did have a good Italian-style pizza somewhere in NY, can't remember name of the place, though. Also had the standard $1 2 Bros pizza, for a buck it wasn't bad.

Iranian pizza is awful  They cheap out on tomato purée, only country where I've ever added ketchup to my pizza it's so dry (don't even add ketchup to anything else since I was like 10).

I had a doner calzone in St Andrews once. Decent drunk food. Chocolate pizza (slice Mars bar underneath cheese, no tomato sauce) was surprisingly not terrible. Still not tried deep-fried pizza (did have deep-fried Mars bar, though, wonderful).

Iranian pizza sounds awful.

Doner calzone sounds heavenly. I'd eat the fuck out of that when I'm drunk.
