Whichever way you look at it, It is a fairly hideous organisation really, undemocratic, cynical, ran by third-rate Brussels fat cats. It is funny because it is one of the few arguments capable of uniting left and right; left, you only need to look at how Germany has got Greece straight-jacketed?; right, arguments for national sovereignty and border control?

Though I am in favor of Europe and I agree the organization needs to downsize and be reformed immediately, the Brits to me never gave the impression they wanted to be part of it and have been threatening to leave for a while now. So I say, grow some balls and just do it. I wouldn't mind more countries doing it and re-evaluating why they are part of the european union; is it to honor an outdated historic agreement or is it to be part of an organization that can compete with other world powers. So I voted for them to be out. Enough already.

And I live in a region in Belgium where a separatist party won the last election, but oddly enough its idiot voters aren't really interested in an independent Flanders. I'd like my country to stay united and given the drop in popularity of the EU, I wouldn't mind the EU headquarters moving someplace else.

Just thought it was sort of obvious, a collective of nations where they like, help each other out with trade or moving freely between each other, thats always what i thought it was and like, on the face of it that don't seem a bad thing but then from what Ronnie was saying in the other thread perhaps it is, if someones getting the shaft for it on one end.

I have often wondered what it's like to have so many countries so close together. In Canada we just have a whole bunch of Canada, and then big brother over there to the south. .not a lot of variety.

I would think you would want to maintain a collaborative relationship, just because so many problems come up where the discussion starts from a basis of partnership and not as competitor.

That was the original intention of the EEC - and indeed there is nothing wrong with operating a free trade zone. Now, it is the EU, a completely different entity.

I believe, it's not in our interest to exit the EU given the fear of TRADE with the EU being different.

It has nothing to do with national defense.

You do realise that Norway and Iceland do not belong to the EU yet still trade with EU on good terms as members of the EEC? Switzerland also have bilateral treaties with the EU. The aforementioned two countries are also part of the Schengen agreement. In other words, it is perfectly possible to have fair terms of trade and other pan-European benefits, through independent foreign negotiation, without signing on to the European Union.
