With Replacements reunion behind him, Tommy Stinson goes back to his own stuff

Jan 19, 2016

“It’s been a while since I’ve actually had a band, or a band kind of vibe,” Stinson said. “It’s always been using other people’s bands, or whatever. These last few times out, I have my own crew, even though it revolves or evolves a little bit, and I’m pretty stoked about it.”

In 1998, Stinson was invited to join Guns N’ Roses as their full-time bass player. The switch from indie hipness to bombastic arena rock seemed like an odd career shift to some ‘Mats faithful, but Stinson remained with GN’R until last year, when Axl Rose reassembled his original lineup.

With both GN’R and the Replacements reunion behind him for now, Stinson has been enjoying his freedom to refocus on his solo work. In addition to touring with the new band, he’s been spending a lot of time writing and recording new material. Last year he released a two-song 7” record titled “L.M.A.O.”

At the Frequency show, Stinson says the band will be playing a little of everything, “...some new material, a little Bash & Pop, a little Perfect, some stuff from my last two solo albums....”

Just don’t expect GN’R covers.

Finally this not-so-gnr member admits that he was using GNR's legacy.

He's talking about past solo tours where he had the Figgs or Alien Crime Syndicate back him up.
