Duff on Talk Is Jericho

Recommended Posts

Jericho indicates in his intro blurb that GnR is/ has been under media gag, but that Duff 'decided to come talk' or something.  Not sure if that really confirms anything though.

Still listening, so far its mostly the same old 'back in the early days' stories.  But a really good listen.

Except for, about NITL they talk about... wait for it.... Duffs current and former security guys.  To me a cleaver way to offer us new info that people like us are interested in, make it feel like a current, NITL tour interview, while giving no info on how band works currently.  Smart, if one doesnt want to broach those actual subjects.  And some of the terrorism security info is also really interesting.

They do awkwardly disclose how the big three (or at least he and Slash) have their own floors of hotels they stay in.  Duff is intent to point out its mostly so they can all have the same type/class hotel room, which are stacked for layout purposes.

Duff also chooses to gloss over his relapses (which imo is fair) and there seems to be some editing to move it on.

Biggest news imo is that Duff says they did Apollo as an AFD30 thing which is why they played until midnight so it would happen on day of original release ( I note a subtle chuckle, from Duff, at the concept).  I think some of us weren't even sure it was an AFD 30?  Duff seems to indicate that the show was added with short notice for him as well.

Izzy isnt unsung in his role "he's sung" all were equal.  Izzy leaving alluded to and a quick moving on.

The dude bro voices are beginning to get grating :P

@The Real McCoy  Thanks a lot of posting this.  As a Duff fan I am absolutely thrilled to be listening to another podcast with him and Jericho (those two have great convos).  And Duff is fucking funny.

But's what really making me laugh so far (still listening) is that they are talking about day to day things, small things like how they can't just go to any dentist - has to be their dentist and how they have to go their own hairdresser, cos no-one else will do it right, and how important sleep and water is and routine, they don't like being out of their routine, and they're talking about their ailments etc... SO not rock and roll.  And I realise for the first time in my life I can RELATE to someone in Guns N Roses.  I'm like, nodding my head and going yes, that's right...I know what you mean! LOL

Jericho in the end says something like "go see GNR blabla, Duff told me off the air this is the greatest tour he has ever been on, hopefully there might be some new music". Whatever that means...

It means that the announcer hopes there is new music. Nothing more.

Listening to it now... One of the interesting (and kinda... unexpected ) things he's said so far is that Melissa is a vocal coach and she gives him advice on how to sing properly.

Yeah, that was really interesting!  Gave me new insight into her role.  I'm still listening to it (it's long!) lol.  I'm at the part where Duff says while they were working out a song in progress, i.e. playing it, Axl would tell them when something wasn't working and that Axl's instincts were nearly always right, even thought they'd get pissed off and kinda fight against that, they'd end up getting it right, or 'landing it' as Duff says.

Well, that was great.  Lot of good things to take away from that podcast, but the thing that sticks with me the most is how Duff and Slash actively encouraged Axl to 'try out' for AC/DC.

How Axl was nervous and lacking in confidence (Duff makes the point that while he and Slash have played with a host of different musicians over the years, Axl 'never had that chance' - diplomatically worded) and they told him he still 'had it' and to go for it.  So that was enlightening.  I always imagined Axl had made up his mind about it and they just had to go along with him, but obviously it wasn't quite like that.

And the other thing I liked hearing was that Duff and Slash flew to London to watch Axl/DC to surprise him.  How cool is that?  Even Jericho mentioned the camaraderie there.  They saw him a couple of times and Duff thought he killed it.

I've long been a skeptic of the Axl/Slash reunion but I think a big chunk of cynicism fell away after hearing that.  Still got a few bits left, mind you.
