I rather the band to be stagnant with Slash and Duff as members than the band to be stagnant with Stinson, Ashba and Bumblefoot as members.

I don't know why you talk bad about Tommy. Probably because he's not "original". Having him in the Band was the best choice because of his punk background and his role as The General.

Great player and an integral part of what Axl was trying to achieve. I’d also say he’s got the best solo work out of all Guns members past and present.

I'm quite surprised actually that people wish the reunion had never happened.

I feared that a reunion would torpedo any possibility of getting new music from the CD sessions. I never really though a reunion would result in a new album with Slash and Duff, I considered the whole reunion thing a pure cash-grab touring event.

Now it seems like a new album is on its way, with Slash and Duff, and that is cool and I am happy to have been wrong on that. I do fear that music from the CD sessions, with Bucket, Robin, etc's contributions intact, will not see the light of day in the foreseeable future, though, and that bums me up. Whether it is worth it really depends on the quality of music that will come out.

As for the reunion shows: Slightly better than expected but nothing close to what was prime Guns N' Roses for me, back in the 80s, I am happy for people who got a kick out of seeing Slash and Axl back on stage, though. I am more into new music than nostalgia.

When you say ‘now it seems’ are you basing it on the comments made by Slash, Duff, Susan etc or something more concrete that I have missed? FWIW I agree with you and think we will get a new album.

I wasn’t old enough to see GNR in their prime - actually got into them about 93. So I saw GNR at Leeds 2002 and Donington 2006 - when I went to the London 2017 show I was buzzing and it WAS a thrill to see Axl and Slash on stage again. But it’s now at the point where that part is done and we need to see what they have to say NOW as opposed to way back when.

I don’t think it would be fair to have expected the reunion to be very close to the GN’R’s prime or to compare it with that era, simply because this is 30 years later, both in terms of the protagonists’ age and the time period in general.
The real problem was that a) it always stands or falls on Axl’s vocal form, b) it dragged on for too long – should have ended in 2017 – and with minimum changes. Combine this with the unfortunate PR and any new material taking forever, and here we are with the understandable frustration.
Covid or not, the first show they’ll play (2022?) must be completely different, not just the same greatest hits.

Agree it went on too long 2016/2017 would have covered it. Obviously the ridiculous money offered was too good to turn down.

You’d like to think/hope when they hit the road again it’ll be a very different show (COVID allowing time to take stock of things/integrating newly created songs in etc).

Of course it could go the other way - been off the road for a couple of years and with everything being so bleak in the world generally they decide to ‘tour the songs they think  the average fan wants’.......I bloody hope not!!!

Yeah, there's always this possibility. Maybe they could start off with some regular shows but gradually add new stuff, and for the love of god, alternate the songs, both old and new. The staleness is one of the worst things.

One could hope the band's taking all this downtime to make the Illusions box for 2021 the best it can be, learning from Locked N' Loaded's mistakes and curating a collection of outtakes, demos and remixes that can make every fan satisfied, supporting it with a tour of deep cuts and unreleased material.

Well, I can't share your optimism that a new album is on it's way, so for me it's just a direct swap - live shows with no new music from nu-gnr, or live shows with no new music from the current lineup. I appreciate them coming back, as it at least gave a chance to see something different for a bit.

Good to see someone was at that Leeds 2002 show - my memory might be playing tricks on me, but as I recall there weren't too many of us fans that were that enthusiastic there.? It seemed like GNR fans were in the minority that night. That show stands out as a special one for me though.

I remember being thrilled at seeing Axl on stage, his rant re the ‘where’s slash’ sign and him replying ‘Slash being in his ass’ and telling the heckler to fuck off basically 😂.

There was some issue with getting on late and needing to get an extension from the council - it was actually the Prodigy’s fault as they overran. Rocket Queen had 70’s style porn videos on the screens (I hope I haven’t made that up....), Buckethead was doing his nunchucks and Paradise City have pyrotechnics going off all over the place at the end....about 1:00am?!!!

Thats from memory and some may be total garbage but I’m sure it’s accurate! Don’t really remember what the general crowd was like but it was quieter than Download 06 for sure.

I think the lateness was Axl actually. I seem to remember a massive gap between them and the Prodigy, where lots of people just wandered off. I don't remember the porn videos (doesn't mean it didn't happen!). I do remember that a guy came out with a monster mask when Buckethead did his nunchucks routine and was making signs behind his back. Buckethead seemed unaware he was there, and I've to this day, no idea what was going on there!

Ah good times. I hitched down to London afterwards to see their show at the Docklands Arena too!

I don’t think there was anything graphic on the videos...just had that 70s look soft core stuff going on 😂. Maybe he was late but sure Prodigy ran over too which didn’t help (they were terrible - so disappointed and it sounded like they were just playing their CD with live vocals/guitar). I know based on the sampling they do etc that might be the result but I remember thinking this is like the CD.....but with bad vocals...😂. Crowd seemed to like them so fair enough.

I remember folk drifting towards the end - mainly folk panicking about missing the shuttle buses I think. 😂

Oh Prodigy were dire. Apparently they considered splitting after that show, as they thought it was so bad. They consider it the worst they ever got. I was right at the front and one of the band was actually apologizing to people in a really genuine and sincere way. I said to him "when are GNR on?" in a bit of a rude manner and he said "soon as possible, I hope you enjoy them, sorry about this show" in such a pleasant way it made me a feel like a wanker!

I seem to remember talk about Axl not being there, and a helicopter arriving after The Prodigy set which was probably him.  I thought he said something like "a lot of people thought I wasn't coming......" onstage too.

It really makes me think though, those shows in the nu-gnr were always exciting and unpredictable. I do miss that element of the band massively.

Wow - that’s quite a thing re the Prodigy 😂 most folk would have kicked off...at least they were honest!

The spontaneity lasted up to as far as NITL for me.....they still did random stuff like Rose Bar etc and now it’s ‘locked in’ with an almost identical setlist etc which is a drag (not so much a problem on a short tour....3 years though....).

Heres hoping something changes for the better - anything - as it’s like a ghost town round here just now. A selects, 5 second snippet of a new track (we could discuss that for MONTHS...😂)...anything!!!

How did i talk bad about Tommy? I just said i prefer Duff to be in Guns N' Roses than Tommy...

For what it's worth, i think pretty much every former CD era contributor should be respected.

Fair enough. Did you know that The Mats were one of Duff's favourite Bands back in the 80s?
