Richard Fortus is a familiar sight onstage in his native St. Louis. In December, the guitarist joined his former outfit, Pale Divine, for its latest reunion show at the Pageant, and sat in with El Monstero during its recent run at the same venue. Also in 2018, he played (again at the Pageant) with Blackberry Smoke and with Live at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre. His primary gig these days, of course, is with Guns N’ Roses, which he joined in 2001. Fortus finally played a hometown gig with GNR at America’s Center in July 2017. But on Saturday, he will try something a little different and a lot more experimental, joining the funk/rock/electronica/jam-band collective Headtronics for a show at the Old Rock House. The band also includes founding members Freekbass, DJ Logic and Steve Molitz. “I think it’s going to be awesome,” Fortus says. “But I’m curious to find out what exactly it’s going to be.” At the point of the interview, Fortus had not yet rehearsed with the band, nor even talked to the other members about how the show was supposed to unfold. But that’s a feature, not a bug. Headtronics is a wholly improvised experience. Put four veteran virtuoso musicians of different musical backgrounds together, stir, turn up the volume and see what happens. “From what I understand, we’re starting off with a rough template and just letting things happen,” Fortus says. A collaboration between Freekbass and Fortus has been a long time coming. “I’ve been a fan of his for a while; I love his playing,” Fortus says. “We’ve always talked about trying to figure out something to do together, and this opportunity just presented itself.” As for DJ Logic, Fortus says: “He is very, very musical. Everything I’ve heard that guy do is very organic-sounding and doesn’t feel forced.” Fortus doesn’t know Molitz personally but is familiar with the keyboardist’s work in the jam bands Particle and Phil Lesh and friends. Right now, there’s only three Headtronics shows planned — St. Louis, Ardmore, Penn., and Brooklyn, but more may be added later. Whether Fortus will be part of those shows isn’t yet known. His busy schedule currently includes producing the next album by Psychedelic Furs at St. Louis’ Sawhorse Studios. He’s also recording an album with the electronica artist BT. There’s another major project in the works, he says, but it’s something he can’t talk about yet. If all of that weren’t enough, there’s his ongoing commitment to Guns N’ Roses. A new album is apparently in the works. “Slash is on tour right now,” Fortus says. “Once he gets back from that, we’re gonna get some more recording done and hopefully get an album out soon. And then we’ll get back to touring.” In the meantime, Fortus is happy to try something as loose and spontaneous as Headtronics. “Generally, the stuff I do is all song-based, where there might be free sections (for soloing and jamming) here and there,” he says. “But this is sort of the opposite of that. It’ll be a cool collaboration, and I’m excited to do it.” What Headtronics • When 8 p.m. Saturday • Where Old Rock House, 1200 South Seventh Street • How much $25 • More info 314-588-0505; metrotix.com

I thought it was more interesting this time because he said "some more recording" where I take it they have already been in the studio doing something.

Also theres a definate when slash comes back we will be finishing recording the album then touring it.

In the past he was more of a tease with less of a definate plan. This time it sounds like a concrete plan and they are just waiting for slash to return in August to finish it off.

To be honest - that’s pretty specific. Clearly says MORE recording suggesting some has happened already.

They way I look at it - if it was a lot of shite, then I’m sure he would be getting his knuckles wrapped for saying this stuff if it wasn’t true. The fact he clearly hasn’t had his knuckles wrapped and is continually alluding to recording etc, Slash confirming that he has a separate section for his GNR riffs, apparent confirmation that Duff and Slash have sifted through the CD stuff......

I reckon something will be released. EP? Full album? CD2? Who knows, but everything points to positive stuff happening and just because of what happened pre-CD, doesn’t mean there will be issues now. It’s a totally different ball game now.

I actually have a feeling that there will be a new record. But it won't be out until 2020. Maybe they'll tour again on the summer of 2020 and have a new album out to promote the tour.

That's my own personal optimistic wish :D

Come on...cut him some slack. He's basically just throwing the press a bone because he has to, more about giving them at least something and then be able to go about his day, this is not to raise false hopes among fans, it's just business as usual.

Every fan knows Axl is calling the shots when it comes to recording and touring. So what is Richard supposed to do? Be silent and not leave the house until Axl feels like making music again?

The minute he's out there people will ask GNR questions and his "hopefully" and "looking foward to" is basically just media auto pilot and who could blame him?

However, that "MORE recording" bit is new.

Looks like most of them are out there doing music except Axl. But maybe that's a good thing, maybe he's writing songs right now...time will tell.

good point

if you ask me, i would say that it is very likely that slash, duff and the aliens wrote and recorded some music

maybe a lot of music

if you ask me, i would say that it is very likely that this music is boring generic rock with shitty groove, shitty dynamics, shitty flow etc (franky should help a lot on that department)

maybe a good riff here or there (slash), maybe a good chord progression here or there (slash, duff)

most likely buried deep within uninspired songs

(I am saying this based on everything that slash, duff and the aliens have written, recorded and released on the last 10 years)

if you ask me, i would say that it is very likely that axl didn't take part of any writing and/or recording session

if you ask me, i would say that maybe axl didn't even listen to anything these guys wrote/recorded

and if axl did listen to anything, he probably didn't get remotely inspired by it

I don’t understand why fortus is so approachable about the topic but everyone seems almost afraid to ask slash or duff about it.

until Axl Slash or Duff comment about it, I won’t believe anything.

also: I’m sure they can go and record whatever they want in the studio, but at the end of the day it’s Axl who’s gonna decide what’s going on a new record and I just can’t see him scrapping everything from the CD era.

Where there is smoke there is fire right? Exception to the rule is GNR. January announcement, new album coming out every year since 1997, CD 2 on the way. Its really hard to stay positive and believe Richard cause he said things similar to this for so many years. Kudos to whoever finds and post this when he says it cause it does always give that guy that glimmer of hope, but after all this time of encouraging responses about new material and so little to show for it, its just hard to believe anything until you see it.

He always talks about how it'll "probably happen," but this actually sounds more definite (as definite as one can be in the GNR world).

He could be referencing having recorded with GN'R prior to Slash and Duff's return. When he says "more recording", he could be talking about Slash and Duff putting in their parts on songs that may have been worked on prior to NITL happening.

That's how I interpret it, anyway.

Because Fortus knows his words have no weight. I’d Slash or Duff had made this declaration it would be headlining story on Rollingstone.com.
