Star Trek: Picard

Recommended Posts

Yeah, what's to say. It's Patrick Stewart back as Picard. One of the all time great tv characters.

The only real negative I can say given it was an opening episode to set things up, is it's paced like a Netflix series that was dropped in 1 day...except Amazon Prime or CBS is releasing this 1 episode at a time. It really would have been great if the whole season dropped at once.

It's a little odd too, especially in this format to go back to 45 minute episodes. I've been used to all my favourite shows being close to an hr or more for the last decade now.

first episode wasn't bad but wasn't too enjoyable for me. The script seems kinda basic and some characters a bit flat like that interviewer with the "I'm a bitch!" stares. Good to see Patrick as Picard again though and it's just 1 episode so I'll keep watching in hope it will improve.

Patrick Stewart as an age ravaged and misplaced Picard is utterly brilliant, and it had the slower more refined ''feel'' of Star Trek, something lacking in Discovery and those Abrams' abominations, however jury still out on the overall story and direction. Did I also notice the merest whiff of ''Marvel quipping''?

I thought it was great barring one genuinely shit special effects scene.

What was that? I sadly don't think they'll return to proper model work.

Irish Romulans.

Apparently Hugh returns from the well loved Borg episode, ''I Borg'' - you saw him briefly on that upcoming bit at the end.

It was the bit when the bird who gets killed charges at the Romulans on the stairs and jumps about 100 feet looking like something out of a video game.

There were definitely a few editorial problems and questionable plotting, such as Picard being blown backwards on the rooftop only to find himself lying down back at home being nursed by his Romulan companions. This jump was so jarring I initially wondered if we'd just undergone another dream sequence.

Sorry, I lasted about 10 seconds before I wanted to stab myself in the ear. Can you summarise?

No, sit through it! He honestly has a lot of fair points though. And I love The Critical Drinker's reviews. It might seem like satire for a while, but when it comes down to it he has a lot of serious points.

Honestly thought most of it was cynical and bollocks.

It's a 10 part story crammed into 45 minute parts. Shouldn't judge the show based on a short introduction.

In fairness the pilot of The Next Generation was iffy, ''Encounter at Farpoint'', and The Next Generation turned into one of the greatest shows ever.

All Good Things with the posh new Enterprise was amazing.

Favourite episodes: ''Darmok'', ''Yesterday's Enterprise'', ''Q Who'', ''Best of Both Worlds''. I like the whole Worf (House of Duras v Mogh Klingon stuff) also, ''Sins of the Father'', ''Redemption'', etc. ''The Measure of the Man'' is an early classic, courtroom drama on the ethics of AI. ''Chain of Command'', Picard being tortured, is a gritty antiwar double-parter that rather sets-up DS9. ''Inner Light'' is an engaging Patrick Steward character piece.

Worst: that episode where Bev Crusher gets raped by a ghost in Scotland, and that season seven episode where Data stars talking in the voices of some ancient civilization (I have never actually managed to finish this episode). And then there is that episode where they are on a swingers colony - nobody who has ever seen that episode can erase this abomination from their mind,

And that similar episode where it is a planet ran by women.

Yeah. That's why, after seeing the first episode, I will wait until all episodes are out and watch them back to back. More enjoyment that way. So far the first episode hasn't really won me over. I could leave it or take it at this point.

There's as many bad episodes as good episodes...in the first season. It is however one of the greatest non serialized shows ever shortly after. I rewatched Measure of a Man just a few days ago and it's a happy reminder of how good the cast was and how it's a shame modern sci fi shows don't feel that anymore.

Honestly I'm just excited that not only do we have Patrick Stewart as Picard again, we have a Star Trek set back again in the 24th Century, soon to be 25th.

Enough of these lazy prequels.

On the wish list for a second season, John De Lancie... they did use Q alot, but he and Stewart had great chemistry. Also just 1 scene with Stewart and Beverly.

...and maybe a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine sequel series with most of the same cast. I might be pushing this.

If you are going the dodgy torrents routes, searches can provide some surprising results. I once downloaded Batman v Superman and ended up with the porno edition. I was oblivious to the fact for about five minutes until Wonder Woman bent down and Superman got his penis out.

It is growing on me. Picard is proceeding like a high-political storyline, where nobody can be trusted and everybody is a double agent; you see a lot of this with the Romulans, e.g., ''Face of the Enemy''. Some of the stuff is not so unprecedented, such as the idea of Starfleet/Federation consisting of a bunch of wankers, which has been explored before in episodes like ''Conspiracy'' and even in the film Insurrection. And ''AI ethic'' stories have been explored through Data, especially in ''The Measure of The Man'' and ''The Offspring''. I suspect the series will delve further into this, into what might be called ''Blade Runner territory''.

''Cheeky fecker''! Swearing in Star Trek! Could have done without it really.

It'll be interesting when Frakes takes the helm (Frakes will direct the final two episodes of Picard).  Frakes directed ''The Offspring'', which is regarded as one of the most poignant episodes. That is the one where Data constructs a daughter for himself, one of those ethical episodes which Star Trek used to do so well.

Just watched the second ep i feel there is just a lot stuff crammed into one ep or time just flies watching this show that could be it because im feeling old as fuck right now haha, I like my trek to be slow, political, sensible, smart and quite camp at times and this show does some of it but not all the way. I guess they are doing a good job since you want younger people to like the show and you still want to keep the old timers on board. considering that, I get what they are trying to do. Dont hate it in any way shape or form because hell yeah star trek however for me to get the real trek feels I'll still tune in and watch the orville which really has the trek feel to me.

*edited to say: ha daisy! the swearing was one thing that I for sure could've done without

If there is one criticism of it it is that it is very ''jumpy'' and episodic. And just how fast is transportation on earth? Although Britain's rails are probably still shite. Picard used the shuttle at the end of episode 2 so it isn't all teleportation. In Old Trek, if people were travelling from planet A to planet B on a shuttle you'd get some dialogue and character building, some incidental plotting maybe, but on Picard people just seem to appear in disparate locations scene by scene and the plot moves on at a heightened pace. It needs to slow down and breath a bit.

Still no where near as breathtakingly whiplash inducing as Discovery or the Abrams bollocks.
