I'm not sure if anyone noticed but last weekend House of Blues 2001 was back on YT for a bit, weekend before was Saskatoon. rocknroll41 Posted August 25, 2019 Share Posted August 25, 2019 (edited) Here are my suggestions for how the band can clean up Hardschool: -Get rid of the four seconds of silence at the beginning. -Replace the minute-long slow-paced intro with a simple AM-filtered measure of the verse chords (like in all the fake leaks). -Have Slash re-do all the leads with a consistent tone/feel (and maybe add an extra lick or two throughout the song). -Have Axl add extra lyrics during the keyboard-heavy bridge section (right after the solo and right before he sings the next chorus). That way, the overall song won’t sound as repetitive. -Lastly, have Axl add just a few more new lyrics on top of the drum roll “build up” part at the end (right before the last vocal line). that should do the trick! According to Slash, it wasn't specifically about Cobain or dedicated to him, but included him, too. The intro does not do the rest of the song justice, and bridge/solo section is very strange. It's a weird mix of old school hard rocker, mixed with this current (at the time industrial). Cut the fat. keep the verse, chorus. Redo the vocal on the verse too. Let Slash get a hold of it and reshape it make a new intro etc, definitely a new solo too. Although I do like the intro it does feel a bit out of place just starting the song like that, the first part of the solo is really place holder sounding but the rest I quite like. axlsalinger Posted August 25, 2019 Share Posted August 25, 2019 The chorus is the best part of 'Hard School' and totally kicks ass, which is interesting because one of the bigger criticisms of ChiDem is that many of the songs have lots of cool parts but weak(ish) choruses. Which makes it even more confusing as to why it wasn't included on the album, being a rocker with a killer chorus. Agree with most that it definitely has that "work-in-progress" feel to it. I'm not crazy about the intro but they were onto something with the outro, I think with some work it could be an awesome outro, and who knows what they've done with it in the DECADES since it was recorded Overall, really dig it. And ALWAYS enjoy hearing new songs from Axl. Prostitute is about GNR, and maybe Sorry and The Blues referred to Slash. But I will agree that these lyrics for Hard School do seem to be about him.
