I don't think that should have anything to do with it, the people taking videos down would definitely pay $10 or whatever to gain access if it were just a 'club member' thing. The fact that we've been around for years is more important than us being club members.

No i am saying in addition to the post count limit for that hidden area.

This policy has been in place for years.  ------------------------------------------------ I want to thank everyone for their participation in this thread and eagerness to find a solution.

Whilst I understand the sentiment, loads of people will miss out - lots of good people. I am not a trouble maker but just because I likely have less than 2k posts people like me would miss out on some

I like you but frankly, this is unacceptable. No one cares about that stuff. Please minimize response time to 30 seconds tops.

I have thought for a good while that it might be an idea to have an annual membership fee rather than a lifetime one. The lifetime membership is a sweet idea, and cool, but an annual membership fee would help keep the forum going, and if those You Know Whos manage to damage the relationship between MYGNR and the host even further, it could help us migrate to another host.

Leave it optional, and leave it at not too high an amount as not everyone's got a lot of money, but I think most of us could afford a tenner a year, say? I'd definitely pay that to support the forum, considering everything it's given me over the years. I may not be the most prolific poster, but I read, and I join in when I feel that I have something to say. :)

As for the issue with the links... it's seriously petty that they're targeting us. I don't know the solution, but I do remember that when I joined the site it took a few days for my membership to be approved. I don't know what was going on at that time to have a vetting system, but if that is no longer in place, it might be an idea to return to it? I realise that it's a hassle for the Mods, but at least when troublemakers are spotted, they won't be able to create new accounts with the same ease as without a vetting system.

Of course, I don't know how the vetting was done back then. What with VPNs, it's probably difficult to identify who's who...

I think the best option would be invitations by the mods, or by well respected community members, to people who are outside the section. Start the private section off by the mods inviting all the normal forum members who know each other and interact everyday, cause you can guarantee there's no one looking to remove things in that group. Most of yous know each other well enough to know who is and isn't looking to cause damage. So start off with all those people in the group

Then the mods(or some other high up members who could be given the power to invite) can start inviting other not so well known members who contribute positively to the forum. If someone is being kind, showing they are a genuine fan, and contributing to a positive forum environment they should get access to the private section. I guess they could private message, but that could be lead to spam, so it would be on the mods and higher ups to be vigilant and aware of new members who are contributing, and inviting them when they feel the member is suitable.

In terms of critiques of the post count and the account age ideas, I have a few. Now I lurk but hardly post, and I'll probably continue to not post even if the above idea is implemented, so nothing I am saying is to benefit myself but more the community.

Having 3000+ posts will lead to spam as others have said, and not everyone has the time or interest to have 3000+ posts on a forum. And just because someone has 3000+ posts doesn't mean they are anymore valuable or contributing to the community in a more positive way then a guy with 500 posts.

In terms of account age(i.e. people with an account since 2005 being allowed access), I think that's an even worse idea. Lord knows who has an account since 2005, and also just because someone wasn't a fan in 2005, doesn't mean they aren't a fan now. I only started listening to GNR a few months after the reunion, had 0 interest in them before. There was no situation where I was going to sign up to he forum before the past couple years, but I listen to GNR everyday now, so I''m no less a fan because I gained interest in them later then other people. This idea would close a lot off newer fans, and probably stunt forum growth as new posters/fans are immediately excluded and have no way of being included.

That's probably the best way to do it because realistically if it's all left on downzy and the mods shoulders it will take too long to wade through that process and then the forum will suffer and slow to a crawl.

Apologies if I'm missing something but why can't you use a secure service provider to ratify memberships with some form of ID? I know it's seems simple but if you had to link a PayPal or credit card you could quite easily stop the dickheads from joining, unless they went to a lot more trouble. If you use a third party details would be kept secure and not in the hands of the mods. Alternatively move your service provider to Russia or China, I doubt they care about takedown requests (this is just an assumption).

Or go the other way.... Lift their bans and allow them to post, it might dissipate their vendetta.

I would seriously object to linking your paypal adress or credit card to any site, less a site being hosted in russia or china lol. It's hugely risky, unsafe and irresponsible.

These people know their way around the internet and god knows what tricks they have up their sleeves. Don't come complaining if your paypal acount should become hacked by these scumbags.

If that should ever become a requirement, I'm out.

That was an alternative. The 3rd party provider could be US based if that makes you feel safer.

Didn't the Chinese govt ban Chinese Democracy in China?

Please read my post, apologies if it comes across wrongly. My suggestion is the alternative to having a secure payment provider would be to move hosting to a country that doesn't recognise or care about US copyright laws, ie Russia or China.

I can say i would never link a PayPal here just so i can get a janky periscope stream to hear them butcher same tired setlist  Sorry but thats really asking too much. A private section could work but it would have to be strictly for content. If discussion is allowed then everyone would congregate there and that would kill the main forum. Any solution is going to be inconvenient sad to say. Shame it has come to this.

My 2 cents...

Treat the people doing this like the miserable, sad bullies they are.

Ignore them. Starve them of the attention  and the reactions that they seem to be getting their jollies from.

This is the advice I have always given my kids, and for the most part, it works.

Hopefully they will crawl away to their little holes and find something else to focus their petty little minds on.

And that's the point, right? To sift out the bad people? The difference between downzy and I  is that he's far more polite about everything than I am. Here's my stance: I could give a remote shit about all the bitching that's been going on in this thread.

This whole "but that doesn't work for me" thing doesn't matter to me even one bit. This forum and the hard work many of us have put into it is under attack. The people who stop in every so often but don't ever feel the need to contribute are not what's under attack.

If you love the community so much, then be part of it for fucks sake. Don't try to guilt me, downzy or anyone else because we have a very real issue to deal with and you can't be bothered to literally lift a finger to help.

What help do you need? Genuinely.

I've got very little money, but I do have time, so happy to help.

My bad.... I didn't mean monitary help. I was referring to all the complaining from the people saying they can't be bothered to post regularly. I was referring to the fact that they could just post more and actually be part of the community instead of whining about the possibility of a private section.

Ah, I just saw the post about DCMA that spawned this discussion. What in the actual fuck?

It's crazy that the fan base wants to be more of a community than the band does. As I said earlier, I've been a part of Mygnrforum since it was a message thread board. I saw first hand it was the die hards who kept the band alive during the dark years. Clambering for bootlegs, demos or news of any kind. When the HoB show leaked with new songs, the base lost its shit. I've seen Axl come here and personally attack forum members and mods. Any goodwill between Axl and the hardcores is long gone. He pissed on that years ago. I'm all for bringing up the firewall and closing the forum off to venom. Add a post/term minimum for a member's only section and keep a general area for the public, if even needed.  But seriously, fuck this band and everything they stand for.  Get in the ring, my ass.  Gn'R have already laid down and pretended to be knocked out.  Utterly pathetic.

Got you. My point stands though - if you need help, I have time, so feel free to give me a shout.
