Next Gen Thread (Xbox Series X & PS5)

Been on PS4 during the current gen due to the far superior exclusives, although I did pick up an Xbone recently as I got one really cheap. Other way round last gen, 360 throughout and then picked a PS3 up towards the end of its lifespan to play The Last of Us and a few others.

Definitely looks like I'll be jumping back to Xbox again, as the Series X looks really impressive to me. Hellblade 2, S.T.AL.K.E.R. 2 and Scorn are three that immediately pique my interest and the recent acquisition of Bethesda just makes it an even easier decision.

After reading the first couple of game reviews, I think it will be awhile before I buy a next gen box.  It sounds like the graphical leaps at present don't justify the cost of a new system.  I'll stick with my Xbox One X for awhile and then see where we're at in a year or two.  Since the XOX sits between the XSS and XSX, I would imagine (or hope) games released in the next couple of years still run it.

That's exactly where I'm at. I'm gonna wait til spring at the earliest, then see who's got the better lineup at that time. I fucking LOVED the last God Of War game, so I'm strongly leaning toward the PS5 for that reason BUT I'll wait til the spring at the earliest to make a decision.

I’ve been on the Xbox bandwagon since the 360 largely because of the controller, Forza Horizons, and the better multiplayer experience, but I think my first next gen console will be the PS5 digital.  I don’t see any first party offerings that does anything for me and I’m hoping the next Forza Horizons is playable on my Xbox One X (which would surprise if it wasn’t, since it’s technically more powerful than the Series S).

There are a lot of PS4 games I didn’t get a chance to play so it makes more sense for me to keep my XOX for Xbox stuff and buy the PS5-D.

That said, I really hope the PS5 gets a new, smaller model. It’s current design will kill my entertainment aesthetic.

I ended up eating my words from back in September and I purchased a Series S. An excellent unit for its price point and right away I can download my previous Xbox purchases thanks to the backwards compatibility. Keep my PS4 for the Sony stuff and voila. Best of both worlds. Collectively a relatively inexpensive way to continue collecting exclusives on both while dipping my feet into next gen.

I'll probably pick up a PS5 digital in the new year, once the scalpers have lost interest and you can actually buy them easily.

I think that's what I'm gonna do too. I do like the look of the Series X but I'd rather spend a little more on upgrading my RTX 2070 Super to a 3080 because all of the XBox exclusives will be released on PC anyway.

Yeah Microsoft don't seem that bothered about trying to sell people a console anymore; I think they see this as the last real hardware generation before the quality of networks will be able to support X-Cloud being piped into people's homes and onto whatever device they have the Xbox app installed on to. I like the new Duelsense controller on the PS5, only reservation I have is the fucking size of it, I don't know where I would put it!

I’m sticking with my Xbox One X until the PS5 gets a redesign. I just can’t get over the design of the box and would not work whatsoever with the dark aesthetic of my tv/entertainment room.  Perhaps if Sony had opted for black I would jump in this early in the PS5’s life cycle; but it’s far too hideous a design to be highlighted in white and not be an eyesore on my dark entertainment console.  I honestly have no idea what Sony designers were think with the white fins.

Sony almost never gets it right the first time when it comes to designing their consoles. It's truly hideous. I  really like the ps5 controller though.

The fins are removable so I'd be surprised if they don't offer custom colors and designs soon but I get your overall point.

The thing is MASSIVE too. I know we've all seen tons of pics of it but pics don't really do it justice. My friend got one and sent me a pic of it next to his audio receiver. I thought "damn, that's big", then I saw it in person it his house and it just looked wayyyyyy bigger in person.

The new controller features is one of two reasons I'm leaning towards a PS5 over a Series X.

The potential of the new feedback of the controller coupled with the PS exclusive of the next God of War game are the only two reasons I might switch from Xbox to Playstation.

the last one was great and I feel like this time Sony really tried to do something interesting with the PS5 controller. Personally I'm going to wait until the console gets a redesign as well before I buy cause it's just much too ugly and doesn't have enough games yet anyway to warrant a purchase for me but I'm gonna go with Playstation this generation cause of the exclusives and the controller.

I think Microsoft chose to just build a good pc-like console with a design that makes sense and achieved their goal but you can't say the design is exciting. It's slick looking and it blends into it's surrounding nicely while Sony went way too far.

Size isn’t a huge concern of mine since I would lay it down and there’s enough height in the long open space below my tv (which will get mounted on the wall one of these days). I don’t have any cable boxes on the shelf, just my little Apple TV and Xbox One X.

In some respects it would fit better than the Xbox Series X since I’m not exactly positive I have enough room to lay the Series X on its side within the shelf space. Both Sony and Microsoft didn’t do me any favours with these designs.

But aside from the PS5’s colour, it’s just a hideous design. The curves and bulbous nature makes little sense to me. I would be getting the digital version but I’m really hoping Sony offers a redesign at some point where the box itself isn’t meant to capture any attention. I want something that gets lost in my entertainment space; not a focal point. Microsoft has been on to something since the Xbox One X, but unfortunately the dimensions of the Series X are unlikely to work with my entertainment unit (which I really like and don’t see ever changing for a long while).

If I was a 14 year old kid the PS5 might have impressed me. But as a 40 year, I want something that’s minimal and doesn’t scream “gamer” when guests are over. But maybe that’s just me.

I hear that. I'm kinda that same way except we don't entertain enough guests upstairs to where I'd care if the PS5 sticks out or not.

If I get one in the spring and they're still on the current design, I'll just throw it between our TV stand and the subwoofer which is in the corner and kind of out of sight anyway.

Having said that, I totally get what you mean about nut wanting it to stick out. It sticks out like a sore thumb in my buddies setup. He has a lot of classic consoles, his audio equipment and so on in his stand. Everything is all wire managed & LED lit. His setup looks REALLY slick except for this monstrosity that now resides beside his receiver lol.

He's totally OK with it because he is a gamer and his kids play with him a ton, so gaming is part of their family experience. That's great for him but gaming is not a big part of my personal family experience, so I don't need this huge thing sticking out.

We're probably in the minority in this respect.

I didn't mean to sound condescending with my 14 year old remark, and for many the aesthetic of the box either doesn't matter one bit or one that fits into their lifestyles.

It just surprised me that Sony went so far on the play box end of the design continuum.  At the very least provide customizable plates from the very start.  Perhaps it's not a very large segment of the market, but it allows Microsoft time to makeup some of the gaming shortfalls (though, I have no faith they will at this point) and re-capture consumers like me who are likely to buy a PS5 if/when Sony offers a redesign.

If Microsoft comes out heavy with some great first-party exclusives or turns up the scope and scale of GamePass to the point where Sony's first-party exclusives become less appealing, then Sony missed out on people like me.  Again, maybe there aren't that many consumers like me, so perhaps it's all moot.  But it seems like an easy thing to offer custom face plates to mitigate those who loath the white monstrosity and also gin up enthusiasm to those who might get jazzed up about a custom looking console.  Seems like a gimme that Sony chose not to pursue.

It is certainly an acquired taste! It kind of looks like something out of the Portal videogames. I still have at least 20 games in my PSN backlog so if a redesign is announced next year, I will hold on for something I may have a good of fitting in my entertainment centre.

Except it will never look like this.

That’s either a heavily photoshopped image or taken in a room with no other lights or tv on.

A year would be pretty aggressive.

Most PS redesigns take three to four years.

I don’t expect a PS5 redesign until late 2022 at the very earliest. 2023 is more likely based on previous timelines.

Yeah wishful thinking on my part. I'll have to get that garage conversion into a cinema/game room so I have somewhere to house the thing....

Who knows. Sony has never released something so huge and obnoxious before.  Perhaps they had to go with this design for logistical reasons (heat) and didn’t have enough time to design something that wouldn’t hinder performance. Perhaps they understand the console needs a redesign asap and will push through something sooner.
