I'd say it's approximately a quarter note delay, set to three or four repeats, and when kicked in the vocal overlaps itself creating a doubling effect. Seems to be done for effect since it really fills out and accentuates those screams. They're definitely not pre-recorded. I've been in the pit for two shows since NITL began and from up close you can see his neck undulating (I guess that's the right word). Like you said, the length varies from show to show.
