They've been putting tunes out all throughout lockdown, keeping people's spirits up. They've also already knocked out a decent album. Vic is a fantastic guitarist with a rather awesome tone. Hey that sounds awesome. Yesterday the MTV classic channel played Van Halen videos for half the day. The local news just said how Eddie died and that was it. So pissed off that rockers still don't get respected even when they die. Eddie was one of a kind guitar player. He deserved more than a sentence. That was good. Sometimes it takes a while for people to come back around. Glad it was before Eddie passed away.

Next year (or so), I am planning on building my own Frankenstrat style guitar. I bought a cheap squire strat (50 bucks). I just plan on using the body, adding a Floyd rose, new neck, and the official EVH humbucker. I wasn't going to do the red, white, and black paint job though. I was planning on going with the white and black striped look instead. Anyways, I am at least 6 month (if not a year away) from this project starting (I just spent a fortune building proton packs for Halloween). I DID worry though, if the EVH signature equipment would continue. If it didn't, they would sky rocket in value. That is awesome, I remember you talking about doing that 5 years ago even. Your Wolfgang is a really cool guitar.
James Bond
The Wolfgang's are lovely guitars. Even the budget ones are incredible value for the money. I used to have a Wolfgang Special but sold it along the way to fund other gear.

I saw them in 2004 with Sammy (despite EVH being a mess, I'm glad I went). I saw them with Dave in 2012 (I think). So I saw them with both Sammy and Dave, and am grateful for that. I had opportunities to see them with Gary, and I wish I would have. In some ways, those were the best shows. I also saw the Sam and Dave tour and DTE (Pine knob). That was a fun concert as well. Dave had a straight EVH clone in his band though. The last tour was fun because of all the deep cuts, but honestly probably my least favorite VH tour I saw. The London gig was great because I was in the barrier, but the band wasn’t as tight in 2015, and Dave was the worst I’ve seen him in person. I don’t remember the Darien Lake gig hardly at all other than it being a cold rainy night for August. 2007 was great for the wow factor - I never thought I’d see VH with Dave singing, and the production was really great with the stage setup. Dave was the best I’ve heard him in person. 2012 was very polarizing for me - I saw both my favorite and least favorite VH gig within the span of two weeks. Pittsburgh was fantastic, definitely my favorite. Really good performance from everyone, I had a great seat, and it was one of only three times they played Blood And Fire live (One of my favorite VH songs). Added that one at the last second and was really glad I did. On the other hand, Toronto two weeks earlier was remarkably bland. The band was okay but by no stretch amazing. I had awful seats up in the nosebleeds which didn’t help. On the plus side it was one of the 2012 gigs where they did The Full Bug. The Buffalo gig was somewhere in the middle for me, but more enjoyable than not enjoyable. On 10/8/2020 at 3:27 PM, Iron MikeyJ said: That makes me happy, to hear about the equipment. soon
I took in two podcasts on EVH today. Both awesome. After I enjoyed Russ’ great pod - a must listen, linked above - I checked out The RS music now pod. It had a previously unreleased audio interview with Edward. I’m kinda left with the inspiring notion of ‘build yourself a guitar and then master it.’ Thats incredible.

I've been watching a lot of interviews with Eddie in the last couple of days and listening to a lot of Van Halen. Never really listened a lot to them because I never liked Roth's ego, but needless to say, Eddie was brilliant. Also been watching several interviews in which he and Alex are speaking Dutch, cool to hear for a native speaker like me. Sad to see him smoke in almost every interview, though.

He truly was brilliant. And man, as if the Dutch didnt produce enough artistic genius' as painters, you also have the Van Halen bros! I thought about your family as I listened and learned. Its been neat to think about him in the sense of a migrants tale. An amazing story of a young biracial immigrant with very little english-language-skills, achieving the American Dream. Im not sure that I understand DLR or his ego, always enjoyed the Van Hagar singles a lot, but EVH is unstoppable in any formation! 7 minutes ago, RussTCB said: Thanks for always listening to, supporting and having nice things to say about my show. I think there are a few similarities, both he and my mom were around the same age when they immigrated to the ''new world'', except of course my family moved back to the old country after ten years (otherwise I wouldn't have been born, haha) and they both went there on the Holland America Line, a passenger ship that set sail from Rotterdam.

But now seems like it might be a good time to tackle that project. Oh that London show! What a weird gig. Such a strange, yet fascinating atmosphere at the fairgrounds which in itself was an odd venue to see them at. I recall it being the cheapest tickets of the tour which was great, but yeah Dave was atrocious. Like, really bad. It was such a crime because Eddie was in absolute top form but even the songs that sounded passable in 2012 were far removed. The frustrating thing is that Dave hasn't actually lost his voice. He could sing the songs correctly, or at least as good as could be expected at his age, if he wanted to. It's annoying more than anything. Buffalo 2012 was great but I'm with you on Toronto. I decided on that the day of and bought a half decent floor ticket last minute and went alone. "Bland" is exactly the word to describe it. The crowd was part of the problem. Zero energy in the air that night. Still, worth it to see Eddie doing his thing like only he could do. I've also seen Sammy and Mikey pre-Circle which I'd actually rank as one of the most fun concerts I've been too. Sammy was great. I'm glad to have at least had a good fix of Van Halen music live. It just feels so surreal that Eddie Van Halen will never play a guitar again. What a loss. I used to have a very convincing Frankie replica that I later sold to a friend. Might be time to get that back... I've also had the pleasure to play on one of the 2007 custom shop ones.

By far the cheapest VH show I’ve been to. Now that you mention it, the crowd did really suck in Toronto 2012. I remember thinking it would be electric because it was St. Paddy’s Day and VH is still very much a party band at it’s core, and the crowd was not there to party
Iron MikeyJ
@RussTCB, I just listened to your VH episode and I found it rather entertaining. My biggest take away is that "Fire in the hole was my go get a beer song." 😀 I've always liked that song, better than Without You tbh. I didn't go see that tour because I didn't know they were going to play both Sammy and Dave songs. It was before the internet was, well the internet of today. So info was a lot more sparse. I was expecting the same sorta thing they did with Sammy, the ENTIRE VH3 album, plus Jump, Panama, Ain't talking bout love, and maybe Right now and Why can't this be love. That probably my biggest VH regret, not seeing them on that tour. I knew a guy that DID see them on that tour, and when he told me what they played... I was pretty bummed. Iron MikeyJ
@RussTCB, After listening to your podcast, I got the impression that you prefer the Sammy years over the Dave years. It seemed as though you were recommending 5150, OU812, FUCK, and Balance OVER most of the Dave era (maybe not VH1, but certainly the rest). For the sake of conversation, if that is true, would you care to elaborate. Also how would you rank the albums?

For the sake of conversation, if that is true, would you care to elaborate. Also how would you rank the albums? I'm a big lyric guy, so I strongly prefer to the Sammy albums for that reason. I absolutely love the music on the DLR records, but the lyrics are no where near as good as what Sammy wrote IMO. My top 5 VH records are Sammy with 2 slipped in from Dave. This is totally off the top of my head, but here's how I'd rank their albums (I might forget one) Balance 5150 For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge 1984 VH I A Different Kind of Truth Fair Warning OU812 Women And Children First Diver Down VH II VH III
Iron MikeyJ
While I also enjoy the more mature lyrics of the Sammy era, I can't say he is the better lyricist. Dave has the ability to turn a phrase, the way he puts words together, that I think is criminally under rated. I 100% agree that some of the Sammy songs (right now, not enough, and a few others) are far more advanced (in content), than anything Dave would have ever wrote. Having said that, take Jump and I'll wait for example. Dave's use of perspective and phrasing is incredibly strong. While I'm not saying they are some profound lyrical insights, they are extremely unique. Basically, NOBODY writes like Dave. Don't get me wrong, Dave has some serious non sense going on lyrically in some songs, but he also really turned some instantly memorable phrases "might as well jump, go a head and jump," "did you see juniors grades," etc. I don't think they can be quickly dismissed imo. As for album rank 1. VH 1 2. 1984 3. Fair Warning 4. Women and Children First 5. VH 2 6. 5150 7. Balance 8. OU812 9. Diver Down 10. FUCK 11. ADKOT 12.
