Did Covid-19 kill GNR?

Did the pandemic destroy the band? Big things were apparently in the works for this year, potentially new music, maybe a few deep cuts played at the very least. All the dates were cancelled and I imagine the rescheduled ones will. A return to normalcy for the music industry is 2022 earliest experts say. Axl will be 60 by the time all this ends. Is this the final straw for an already nearing creatively bankrupt band? Will we see them again after all this? Will this be used as an excuse for the lack of music for the rest of the bands lifetime if they come back?

No. Just absolutely NO.

The band did all the damage to itself. If you want to be more specific Axl Rose and his dim wit management. Covid is a convenient excuse, but they will never mention how they ripped the arse off the touring side of their business. It's all going to be "we really wanted to this that it the other but...covid".

Don't even entertain this argument. In 2017 had covid hit, we could have this conversation. Gnr spent all their time and effort on touring and now they are sitting on loads of cash but they've spent all their good will, and they've lost a lot of respect from loyal fans.

TBF - we don’t know if they have or haven’t been working on stuff. Slash’s recent comments at the Pinball launch confirms he is working on GNR stuff....I have no doubt work IS happening. It’s just the WHEN we will hear it that’s the problem.

I hope your right.  I was excited at first when Slash said that they were working on stuff.  Now after going on 5 years, all the comments seem just like all the past empty promises from all the other past band members

We have official confirmation, slash has been writing stuff for gnr and smkc.

We have official confirmation smkc will be releasing new music next year.

I have seen a post from another site that gnr have a single recorded and ready to be released at any time.

If the band is finished, its down to one member only.

btw Covid didn't kill GN'R. Not the bullshit merch side of things at least. It's business as usual:

"Shop now" written in the Use Your Illusion font under a surgical mask is definitely not something I would have wished to see if anyone asked me back in 91.

My 12 year old son who was 4 months old when CD came out (and was with me in Best Buy first thing in the morning) asked me an odd question the other day while driving in the car listening to a GnR tune. He asked if GnR was a “dead band”. I asked what he meant, and he basically said a band who still plays but doesn’t release any new music.  I was surprised by his keen observation and had to agree with that assessment.  I told him we’ve been told for many years that we have been told new music was being worked on, but still nothing.  I never looked at it this way as I’ve always fallen for the same new music lies and false promises.  Maybe it’s time I give up this idea.   If I could have ten seconds to speak to team Brazil or Axl I would say: Stop the excuses and all the delays and false statements. If you want to release new music than do it. It’s not that hard, even a 12 year old can see that.

This is a very clear signal that these products are made by people who are completely disconnected with the band basics and its content let alone semiotics of that.

And unfortunately based on many evidence we have, it is Fernando who is creating this sort of stuff through cheap "freelance designers"

Too many dramatics. I also in some way pissed off, that Guns N' Roses can't release new music, but also I am sick of all this ideas that "band is dead without new music", "won't listen until they release something" etc. I genuinely hope that they will release a new album, but for 90% I am sure it is not going to rock the world. There will be no new PC, no new SCOM or WTTJ. And I hate the idea to release something just to release something because the industry dictates that. Modern pop-musicians stamp shitty records every year, but they are known only for several weeks on billboard charts, then they are dead.

And the band basically can't go bankrupt any time soon because it still gets royalty from the tons of merch, CD sales, digital rents, etc - GNR is a huge money-making machine even without new albums. Yes, it can't match The Rolling Stones' empire in terms of scale, but it still has necessary buzz to keep sales only due to the band's name. Sad but true.

I want  them to release new music because I want to hear something new from them and not because the industry dictates anything.

I don't expect them to write the next PC or another SCOM but when I'm happy with some of their solo stuff, I'm convinced I'll be happy with what they come up with as 3/5 of what was called my favorite band of all time.

All being well they’ll come back in 2022 but a 60 year old Axl trying to do 35 year old songs justice will not see them make it into 2023.

There could still be a future for the band but they can’t rely on Appetite For Destruction anymore.

That’s the big frustration though isn’t it? Why the band don’t dip into it the catalog and play songs that they CAN do justice and offer a bit of variety in the setlist.

Also - they could release some all new material which suits the current band....that would help! 😂

Bucket leaving (which I entirely sympathise with - riots leaving a bad taste, Tommy being a bully, lack of anything released) killed GnR. At least creatively. That was the one and only second chance. Ever since then they've been a touring nostalgia band. The CD release was a legacy of the Bucket years so even that doesn't stop 2004 being the year that killed Guns creatively.

Tommy was a bully?

Bucket left because it was already a touring nostalgia band.

No way, I've no interest in going to a show if they do less UYI AFD material. What's the point?

Whilst I understand the lessoning of AFD/UYI content would be a turn off....surely if there was new material to play that can only be seen as a good thing?

Otherwise the opinion that they truly are a nostalgic act is true.

Would you not want to hear new stuff?

Apparently so. There were stories he bullied Bucket and was just generally unpleasant (I imagine out of jealousy), which if true is unforgivable. As "the general" he should have recognised Bucket as the core talent and protected that asset.

All the momentum the band had coming off of 2016 has completely evaporated at this point; unless Axl wants to be touring casinos over stadiums sooner rather than later, more needs to be done to draw in new fans to care about Guns N' Roses.
