Popular Post allwaystired
Just now, Blackstar said: I think you're taking this a bit too seriously, and it's not meant to be taken so seriously. First of all, although there were musical differences in the 90s, this narrative (that Axl wanted to go "full industrial" or do songs like Silkworms and Slash/Duff didn't let him) doesn't have much factual basis and it's been blown out of proportion by the fanbase. The buzz is not about the song itself. Most fans, including NuGnR fans, still don't like it and they know it's not a "new" song. What they do like is that the band did something so out of the ordinary, a so "WTF" thing, which clearly was not for the casuals or for selling the tour. It's probably just Axl wanting to troll the hardcore fans a bit and have some fun. And it looked like they all had fun playing it. Absolutely. I'm in the position of really liking the song, but the latter point you make is exactly why it's a great thing to happen. There's also a certain irony in saying "I wish this band would do something unexpected, they're so predictable and stale......oh not THAT unpredictable thing, I wanted a DIFFERENT unpredictable thing". It really is totally fine that people hate the song though - that's just a taste of thing. I'm not going to try and convert anyone to the wonders of Silkworms just because I happen to like it. As a 'maybe this band do actually have some juice left in them' thing, it's only a big positive though.
Gnrcane
Absurd is a pretty bad song and it almost seemed like a joke to Axl. That said, if they play one or two "new" songs at each show even if they are terrible, I'll be happy at the shows I attend. Especially if they rotate a few by show so you don't always know the next song to be played.
RussTCB
One of the biggest things that I take away from this is that the bad looked like they were having fun for once. I've never liked the song, but watching them perform it was far more enjoyable then the entire rest of the set where they were going through the motions for years.
Bansidhe
Even 20+ years after it was originally performed, I'm still unsure whether or not I actually like it. The song is just so odd. Certainly, the way this lineup is playing it, there's more vibes of a hard rock PiL as opposed to the Prodigy thing when it was more synth based. More than anything else, Axl looked like he was having fun playing it. Hopefully there's that hunger to get more unheard/rarely played stuff into the set. I'd probably still be going mental if I was there and they played it randomly like that though 😅 Edited August 5, 2021 by Bansidhe
circusboy666
I’m not embarrassed to say I love the original rio version. After playing “absurd” I 100% don’t want to hear any new music from them. So glad I didn’t get tickets to Met life. They’ve sounded terrible overall from all the vids I’ve seen. It’s over folks.

themadcaplaughs
So other than Dizzy and Axl, does that mean everyone else in the band was playing this song live for the first time? Just struck me that all the 2001 performances would have been with Paul Tobias, so this as even a first for Richard Fortus.
lightBLASTER
I would've never guessed in a million years the first new song they'd play live with Slash and Duff would be Silkworms. You cannot make this shit up. 2
FuriousStyles
Hmmm, if this is a troll job.... "Hey Axl, Slash! You big dummies! Don't reunite with Izzy and Steven. They suck! You'd suck worse with them than Frank/Richard/Melissa/Ugly Graphics Big Screen Video Guy" That should do it!
Scumcat Esq.
Really like this new love song! Next up: a co-headline tour with Body Count.
Kira
The reworked version sounds better than silkworms I guess. But those lyrics….this is the post me too era, I just can’t fathom releasing a song with those lyrics, made me cringe.
CAFC Nick
Awful song but look how much interest it has gained - not only in the forums but also major outlets such as NME, Blabbermouth etc...

And then hitting it home with: “That was fun. So you heard it here first, a new Guns N’ Roses song.” *(let's face it- 98% of the bros n bras at Fenway last night & at other shows could give a rat's ass for anything not played on WAAF/BCN back in the day.) Regarding the "Is Axl trolling fans?" discussion- Just reposting this as it got buried yesterday.
Gold top 78
What I can’t get ma head round is Axl plays Slash and Duff songs from the vault hoping they’ll work on some of them and they choose Silkworms as one of them ?

Bansidhe
3 minutes ago, Tom-Ass said: Add me to the list It's a solid if unspectacular tune but if released as a single with contributions from the current lineup, would pretty much fit the mold of what casual punters expect GN'R to sound like. If it was around when they were doing the Illusions then it could easily have been swapped over with something like Shotgun Blues.
Cosmo
They might have thought it would be a good idea to "troll" fans with this PoS song after 13 years of no new material but... it isn't. The more I think about it, the more I realize it's the only explanation. They DO have decent songs on the vault. Hard School isn't a big deal but it's not THE worst song on their catalog like Silkworms/Absurd. Oh My God is a pretty good song, better than a few of the songs on CD, actually. Plus, we know they have some other ones that never got released at all. And still - they play this PoS version of a PoS song NO ONE ever appreciated. It's dreadful. It's awful. And they're not in a position to "troll" fans, like that. Seriously.

TheGeneral
Got downvoted as hell on Reddit for saying the "pussy full of maggots" line is disgusting and ruins the song. I'm sorry but it is incredibly disgusting and neither edgy nor funny. 1
rocknroll41
The return of this song reminds me of that “Axl hitler” video from back when the locker leaks started: SS Officer: But Mein Axl, this could finally give fans a chance to hear songs like Atlas! Axl: FUCK ATLAS! MY SILKWORMS MIXES ARE AT STAKE!!

I feel the same way about absurd. Like the verses (don't care about the lyrics). I feel the same about a lot of the cd-material; strong verse melodies, the rest? Nah.
