Has there ever been another GN’R song that has had as much hype behind it to be played live than Hard Skool?

It's not about the song itself too much, it's about the fact it's kinda new and sounds better than Silkworms and more like real GN'R (plus we used to have only a snippet for such a long time). I believe we would have been hyped about, Idk, State of Grace or Atlas as well, obsessing about it in every thread. Now imagine if they promised or rehearsed a brand new song...

The Hardschool thing interests me. On one hand, my first assumption would be that they simply want to hold off on this track and make it the lead single of the new album, therefore it doesn't make any sense to play it a year (or years) in advance. But then why the hell would Axl himself soundcheck it, both in Mexico last year and in Hershey a few months back? This leads me to believe Axl knows he can't pull off the chorus and is afraid to perform it, which is a terrible sign for future material like The General, ect.

Maybe Axl should sing the chorus one octave lower than we heard on the leak.. Let Melissa sing the higher octave

I would argue Prostitute based mainly off a post by Kaneda in which he said something along the lines of, "I can't wait to hear Axl rip into Prostitute for the first time..." This was before anyone had heard it but Chris' line made one think that it was a rocker, so, I think that fueled hype, at least on mygnrforum.

I think Youth was the first to talk about Prostitute, suggesting it was a hard track for Axl to put together. Brain was later asked about it, and he said something vague, which fueled more rumors about the nature of the song. But yeah, a lot of fans were convinced it was a rocker before hearing it.

I think it's because Prostitute was described as "fire and ice". That's what made at least me think that it might be a rocker. I was expecting a song with a lot of contrast, like really hard hitting parts and some calmer parts.

At the end of the day that is kinda what Prostitute is, but I guess I was expecting it to be mostly hard hitting with some calmer parts, but it ended up being mostly calm with some hard hitting parts.

I remember the 2011 Estranged hype. Actually, the whole RIR 2011 had a LOT of hype, at least in the South American forums. 2010 was a great year for GNR and we here hyped for the first pro shot with that fully rasped Axl voice, plus the band rehearsed OMG and Going Down was on the set list. Then we all saw what happened, but it was a great moment in the SA forums

The nostalgia <3

Tbf looking back to 2011 that tour was pretty good vocally. I watched some clips the other night of the first time they do Civil War and a few things like Shacklers and Axl was great. Powerful. Funny that we moaned at the time. And i still love the bandana sunglasses and moustache with the longer hair look.

I remember being really disappointed after Rio, cause I had tickets for Buenos Aires (7 days after Río) and the Buenos Aires show was amazing. Axl was in top shape and Estranged was my personal highlight of the show. It was weird that no one payed that much attention to Going Down, it was on the set list and it was a new song

Yeah, I think that was the late Paul Buckmaster with the fire & ice quip. IIRC, he had some Guns listed work in his CV well before the album came out, and somebody asked him about it. Paul was gracious enough to actually detail the song. Had totally forgot about that one :)

As for the reception, Prostitute was Untitled #2 (or #3) on the AntiQuiet leaks - yet it was openly contested on the forums, as the track presumed to be Prostitute sounded nothing like the imaginary track called Prostitute.

Yeah, I remember people arguing about whether or not Axl says the word prostitute in the song. The way Axl pronounced the word didn't really help. 😄

Also the earlier mixes of it had a better example of those heavy and softer moments. Once again it's a case of the earlier mix on the village sessions discs being far more dynamic then the album mix. I think the song would have been highly regarded had it have came out as intended. Same with IRS
