Here is a correct example: "I literally shit my pants!" - In this example, it is correct if the person pooped their pants, and didn't just fart. I feel like we all can relate to this.

You're right (Sheldon Cooper also approves). It's used for emphasis, yet incorrectly, illogically. 

What I have a beef with is this abundant, exaggerated use of "cringe". You can see it even here every day. It speaks of ignorance. You can't look at those times, its fads etc., and criticize them with today's eyes. Or rather: these folks should understand that one day, they'll be laughed at as well - by the same-minded people in the future. 
Yeah, maybe I'm taking things too seriously, but it's true and it's lame.
