darkside259 Posted November 10 Posted November 10 (edited) GUNS N ROSES Ain't it fun This song was originally by Rockets from the Tomb. However, it was first recorded by the punk band Dead Boys. Dead Boys are an American punk rock band from Cleveland, Ohio. The band was among the first wave of punk bands, and was known as one of the rowdiest and most violent punk groups of the era. Ain’t it fun, one of the dead boys greatest hits is a brilliant piece of punk satire. The titular phrase is repeated through many lines, in a sarcastic manner "Ain't It Fun" is a song written by Peter Laughner and Gene O'Connor (known as Cheetah Chrome) and performed by their protopunk band Rocket from the Tombs. The song was first released by O'Connor's later group Dead Boys on their 1978 second studio album, We Have Come for Your Children. Laughner died a year before.. The GN'R version is with Michael Monroe, lead singer of finnish rock band Hanoi Rocks The inclusion of that song comes directly from one of Guns' main influences, especially Axl: Michael Monroe, the voice of the then-dissolved Hanoi Rocks—a glam emblem from Northern Europe. By the early 90s, both singers were friends; in fact, Monroe had already been invited to play harmonica and saxophone on 'Bad Obsession'. The Finn, who also has a developed taste for punk—as he has shown in his solo career—had a recent interview with RockSverige: 'Axl told me he had heard Dead Boys; I gave him a tape, and we were listening to it in the car around Hollywood. When 'Ain't It Fun' came on, he said: "Hey, I know this one, we have to do a duet on it! Let's make a cover album." He called Slash, and told him to tell the band that we were going to include that song.'" Stiv Bators The underlying intention becomes clear: to re-version one of the best legacies left by his friend. 'When we recorded it, I asked Axl if I could dedicate it 'In memory of Stiv Bators'. lead singer and frontman of the punk rock band Dead Boys and the post-punk band The Lords of the New Church He said of course. In the summer of 1990, Bators, who was intoxicated, was hit by a taxi while crossing the street. Unconsciously, Bators got up and said he was fine. He was taken to the hospital, although it is said that he left without being examined by a doctor after waiting several hours. Reports state that he died in his sleep from a concussion.' recalls the man credited as the guest vocalist, adding that: 'The point is that I never wanted any money [from the royalties]. At the time, I had a terrible manager, so I didn't even want to talk to him about it, so he wouldn't mess it up and Guns N' Roses would change their minds. I just wanted the song to be on the album, for the dedication to appear, and for them to spell my name right.' Ultimately, Monroe only has words of praise for the final result: 'It turned out magical, Stiv's spirit is there; without a doubt.' Musically, 'Ain't It Fun' is characterized by its raw, direct energy, The intensity of the music complements the lyrics' message, creating an atmosphere of controlled chaos that is both a celebration and a critique of extreme hedonism. This dual approach allows the song to resonate with an audience that can identify with both the momentary enjoyment and the long-term repercussions of an impulsive lifestyle Ain't it fun when you're always on the run? Ain't it fun when your friends despise what you've become? Ain't it fun when you get so high, well, that you, you just can't cum? Ain't it fun when you know that you're gonna die young? Ain't It Fun is stellar though, by far the best track on TSI and has possibly the best tone Slash has ever had on a studio track... 4 1 Quote

The production of TSI was stellar and I also love Slash's tone on Since I Don't Have You. I'd also lump Sympathy for the Devil in there as well. Slash really shreds on that outro. 4 1 Quote

Edit: I've confused myself now, but I do remember those two songs were involved. You're remembering the right songs, but TWAT has the lowest note and Ain't It Fun has the highest note. It's the whistle note type scream in Ain't It Fun that's the highest note by Axl ever. It's the very low background vocals in TWAT that are his lowest notes. 1 Quote

This. And it kills me to understand why on earth he doesn't want to sound like that anymore. That intro made me want to start playing guitar. 7 1 1 Quote

Sebastian Bach said that he suggested this song for a duet - much like he did with My Michelle - back in 2006. But, for some reason, Axl denied it. Also, Axl had the chance to do it live with Michael Monroe when they toured together in 2022. Again, nothing came out. 2 Quote

I can imagine 2006 Axl would have struggled to nail it, never mind 2022 Axl. It's definitely one of my favourite tracks. As said above, the intro makes me want to go grab my guitar every time I hear it. The tone is sublime. Would Slash have gone straight in to a cranked Marshall for that? 2 1 Quote

Just watch any My Michelle video from that era, the guy could do the old songs just as well as the newer ones. 1 Quote
