I'd have said 19th February, 1980 - when Bon Scott died. But really, that was only the beginning of AC/DC's reign, because straight after that they went and got Brian Johnson and recorded Back In Black.

But rock hit rock bottom (excuse the pun) the day that the every song in the top 10 of the charts were made up of R N'B and rap music.

Music isn't dead. It just isn't up your ass when you click on MTV or VH1. Active bands (releasing new material): Megadeth, Black Label Society and Velvet Revolver. And some prog. Other than that- nothing.

Music will NEVER die as long as I have my CDs. :)
