I would argue that there other bands that are more important than them. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, all responsible for modern rock.

Lets not forget The Yardbirds who, at one time, had Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck in the line-up.
