Canter's Deli

Axl there here. Will he play there?

Adjacent to Canter's dining space, the Kibitz Room, a particularly congenial haven for music and matzo on Fairfax, features a full bar and a narrow stage filled every evening with jamming local bands. Sometimes the music gets loud, but overall the crowd is fairly low key, enjoying the beer on tap and live music. The Kibitz Room has become a great place to catch your favorite music stars on stage in front of you and has become something of an Los Angeles scene.

The Kibitz Room became a thriving music venue thanks to a waiter's inspiration. One of the Canter's waiters, Eric Gold, asked if his jazz band could play in the Kibitz Room on Monday nights. A lot of local musicians came in to listen, hang out, and drink $1.30 beers and some of them asked if they could come in on a Tuesday to play. That first Tuesday night, a hundred people showed up.

Now there is something going on in the Kibitz every night of the week. Wednesday through Sunday may be the nights when the mood best approaches that of the good old days the neighborhood boys remember. Every night turns into a jam session by 1 a.m.

The Kibitz Room is open daily from 10:00am - 1:40am. Call (323) 651-2030 for more information.

The Kibutz Room does not necessarily book rock acts, mostly comedy, jazz, the occasional singer. But to follow up. This intrepid reporter went twice to Canter's this week in the hopes of proving the Axl story true. In addiiton to the main dining room, in which I was seated, there is a second room which was closed off, most likely because there was no need for the extra room during lunch hours. I made sure I was seated near the hostess so I could see all the comings and goings. The first day I saw an actress, whose face was familiar but I have no idea who she was, emerge from that closed room with her agent. So, under pretext of looking for the bathroom I entered that room. It was empty. After two hours, no Axl.

The second day, seated in a position near the hostess and with a clear view of the closed room the only "celebrity" I sighted was Jack White and his ex-wife. They were seated in a corner booth in the main room.

Any further surveilleance will require a fee of $10.00 per diem to keep me in corned beef and/or pastrami on rye. It's well worth it.
