Lumiere
I've always considered Children Of Bodom to be melodic death metal But they aren't.They're power metal, with a slight prog metal influence. The vocals have a slight technical-death metal tinge to them, but that's it. Lumiere
COB aren't power metal in that sense. But, a brief inspection of the instrumentation that permeates their albums (tricky drum patterns, chainsaw guitar, swirling keyboards, liquid solos etc.) make them power metal. They're certainly not black or death, but cateogrising music (especially metal) is a heinous crime.
Duffan
It's not a style I ever really connected with , I guess I just don't feel what those guys are trying to do , the musicanship is heavy as hell though and that is damn cool . I never really liked the way the vocals are done but I'm not gonna knock it either . The thing I don't get is how many fuckin' sub-genres are in death metal ? Lawzy
I am more of a fan of the melodic death bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquility and Arch Enemy(I don't care if anyone think's they're not melodic death, I could argue, but it's pointless when so many elements cross over from other genres) than straight death metal. I do listen to the odd bit of Morbid Angel, Nile and Death though. Generally the lack of melody puts me off, but death metal(and extreme metal in general) often tends to have awesome rhythm. Some of the most awesome drumming I'll ever hear.Children Of Bodom are awesome(Alexi Laiho = best lead player in extreme metal IMO), but they're not really death metal. They describe themselves as somewhere between black and thrash metal. Obviously there are classical influences in there too. Definately one of my favourite bands. On the subject of black metal, I'm listening to "At The Heart Of Winter" by Immortal at the moment. Amazing stuff. Lumiere
I do listen to the odd bit of Death. Generally the lack of melody puts me off.Children Of Bodom are awesome(Alexi Laiho = best lead player in extreme metal IMO). If you want some melody, listen to the later DEATH stuff. Lots of melody there. There are much better guitarists in the field of extreme metal than Laiho (and I wouldn't COB as truly extreme metal), but he's pretty damn incredible. Lawzy
I mentioned in my my post that I listen to Death.Down tuned guitars and growled vocals make Bodom extreme metal for me. Sure there's the obvious thrash, classical, and plain heavy metal stuff in there too. As for better guitarists, it's all opinion and what makes a great guitarist for you. Almost all of Alexi's solos are memorable and his phrasing is awesome. Not too shabby technique wise too. Especially when he's got to nail half those sweeps while trying to growl at the same time.I'm open minded though, care to throw in some names? forcechangenow
Spiritual Healing - Their second best.Spiritual Healing is Death's weakest album of the 90s by a considerable margin. Human, Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns and Sound Of Perseverance piss on it from a great height. ok, the sound of perseverance, as deron said, and i agree with, is very thin, and the vocals are bad, i like it though, and itp is just way too electronic sounding, and Human is alright, it just doesn't seem to reach the greatness of SH or Symbolic to me.
