Run disk cleanup, and tick all the boxes except "Compress Old Files". Then it will clear out any rubbish on your system. It won't delete any important files.

Then run the disk defragmenter, this 'tidies' up your hard drive by moving all the files together so they run more efficiently. When you run the defragmenter, DO NOT turn off the PC or run any other programs. Turning off the PC will just lose your data when the defragmenter is running. It is safe, however to stop it and close the defrag.
