As much as i love cash, I'd swap him for the stones or ray charles maybe? but thats pretty much right otherwise i think

I didn't really put that top-five in any order. Ray Charles could work in place, too. Cash is very influential, though.

1. Miles Davis - He single handedly changed jazz five or six times and was the first to experiment in so called "jazz-rock" fusion. Bebop-modal jazz-hard bop-fusion, yeah he was behind all of that.

2. Muddy Waters - Without Muddy Waters there is no Elvis, no Chuck Berry, no Little Richard, no Rolling Stones, no nothing. If he hadn't plugged blues music in rock would be nowhere.

3. Bob Dylan - Made it OK for a singer with a shitty voice to still sing a song sincerely and successfully, allowed songwriters to write about things beyond love. His work in folk music laid the groundwork for the "hippie" culture which would in turn produce scores of influential artists.

4. The Rolling Stones - Established "Hard Rock" as we know it, they bridged the gap from the blues and influenced ALL "rock" that followed, all the way up to Guns N' Roses.

5. The Beatles - Set a model for melodic songwriting and most importantly allowed mainstream experimentation into whatever the fuck you wanna throw into your music.

1. The Beatles: Pioneers of General Rock/Pop music, possibly most popular artists of all time, rivaling Elvis. Simple, but good song writing, that many other artists afterwards adapted. Music has been noted as huge influences to Ozzy Osbourne, and many other influential artists, mainly from the 70s. Huge musical influence and recognition on bands through out 60s-Present.

2. Bob Dylan: Musically, in regards to Artists mastering themselves to be like Bob Dylan, Dylan isn't enormously influential to the modern musical scene. You don't see many folk song writers out there, you know.

What makes Dylan one of the most influential artists to this day are the messages in his songs and about the social status of the 1960s, to the issues of Racism, to Change and a whole bunch of other subjects. His influence is more prominent, modernly speaking, in subject matter, rather than in musical influence.

3. Michael Jackson: First Music Video with a storyline. No November Rain, or any of those types of Music Videos with out Michael Jackson. 60 Million+ copies sold of Thriller, making it the most successful album by 18+ Mil on 2nd ranked, AC/DC's Back In Black. Huge influence on modern Pop Music. Except his Pop Music was good and modern Pop Music sucks ass.

4. Chuck Berry: The original badass of Rock guitar. One of the first really electrifying Frontmen. Nothing more to say.

5. Cream: Many People don't acknowledge the fact that before Cream was around, guitar solos weren't very long at all. They were generally just a chorus or even shorter. Cream was the first, or at least the first popular band to use extended Guitar solos. Rock Fans all know how big this is...

Honorable Mentions:

Elvis: Elvis, the person and the frontman, is extremly popular, perhaps the most popular Artist of all time along with the Beatles, but his music and musical influence isn't exactly as prominent as the 5 I've listed above. Elvis is remembered for being Elvis, his credit to fame is for being one of the first Rock stars. Not particularly for his ground-breaking music or pioneering of a style or instrument. (Chuck Berry/Guitar)

Deep Purple/Black Sabbath: Purple/Sabbath were the pioneers of Metal. Purple were more pioneers of Thrash Metal, since they played faster, louder, etc. Sabbath were more pioneers of Death/Dark Metal, since they had darker lyrics.

The Ramones: Made Punk.
