I want to record some guitar licks. I've got a microphone and everything, but what program do I use for this? Is it something I need to download or will it be on my computer already somewhere?

Your best bet would be to obtain some sort of recording software. You can use your mic and the sound recorder that comes with Windows. That works fine if you want to record a 10-second riff before you forget it. But for actual song recording, I would recommend getting some software. Something like Cubase, Protools, or Cool Edit, should do the trick.
