The Arctic Monkeys' first record could become the fastest-selling debut rock album since records began, according to experts.

The band release 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' on Monday (January 23). Retailer HMV claim that their pre-oders suggest demand is the highest for any debut rock act since the release of Oasis' 'Definitely Maybe' in August 1994.

The album could sell up to 200,000 in its first week. Chart expert Gennaro Castaldo said: "We might be entering the Chinese Year of the dog, but as far as the Music Industry is concerned 2006 is very much the 'year of the monkey'. We haven't seen this level of excitement for a new artist since the Britpop-heralding arrival of Oasis more than 10 years ago.

"There has been a great vibe around the Arctic Monkeys for quite a few months now, but it usually takes much longer for a band to develop mainstream appeal and the commercial success that comes with it. The Arctic Monkeys seem to have managed this in just one leap - it's amazing how much impact they have had in such a short time."

The band's second single, 'When the Sun Goes Down', looks set to go to Number One this Sunday (January 22).

Arctic Monkeys have also revealed details of new material in the running for the follow-up to 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'.

Singer Alex Turner said: "It's called 'Do Me A Favour' which I played to a friend and he's right proper gone for it. It's the further adventures of the girl in 'Mardy Bum' - my ex."

He added: "There's one that might be called 'Three Episodes Where Someone Else Got In The Way'. I can't decide if that's w**k or not yet. And 'I Wish You Would Have Smiled In The Bakery'. I'm looking forward to that 'un."

"June 16: 'Contraband' debuts at the #1 spot on the Billboard Albums chart, with 256,000 units sold in the first week!"

http://vr.belowempty.com/chronology_2004.php

So apparently they'll have to do better than 200,000 to have the fastest selling album.

Wait...does that mean that Contraband is currently the fastest selling rock album ever? Or have they missed off others as well?

Edit: My friend has said since their going on about Oasis maybe they mean their just talking about British bands and forgot to say that.

I like them. They're not exactly musical rock gods but the lyrics are class and very very true. Its handy to be British and lived in the sort of scummy areas to see where they're coming from.

The Arctic Monkeys said people will slag the album to peices but theyve never expected to have 2 number 1 hits and a soon to be number 1 album either and dont know why they're successful already.

Their songs have been bootlegged to hell on the internet and thats where most people heard about them. They can't help their success but I fear it will be their downfall into the mainstream crap section along side Oasis and Franz Ferdinand who get wanked over by the media all the time and are constantly on the tv. People will get sick of them soon.

Its a shame really, I think they're a fantasticly fun band. The song A Certain Romance is about chavs and its so fooking true.

Well oh they might wear classic Reeboks

Or knackered Converse

Or tracky bottoms tucked in socks

But all of that's what the point is not

The point's that there ain't no romance around there

And there's the truth that they can't see

They'd probably like to throw a punch at me

And if you could only see them, then you would agree

Agree that there ain't no romance around there

You know, oh it's a funny thing you know

We'll tell 'em if you like

We'll tell 'em all tonight

They'll never listen

Cause their minds are made up

And course it's all okay to carry on that way

And over there there's broken bones

There's only music, so that there's new ringtones

And it don't take no Sherlock Holmes

To see it's a little different around here

Don't get me wrong, oh there's boys in bands

And kids who like to scrap with pool cues in their hands

And just cause he's had a coupla cans

He thinks it's alright to act like a dickhead

Don't you know, oh it's a funny thing you know

We'll tell em if you like

We'll tell em all tonight

They'll never listen

Cause their minds are made up

And course it's all okay to carry on that way

I said no

Oh no!

Oh you won't get me to go!

Anywhere, said anywhere

I won't go

Oh no no!

Well over there there's friends of mine

What can I say, I've known 'em for a long long time

And yeah they might overstep the line

But I just cannot get angry in the same way

Not in the same way

Not in the same way

Oh no, oh no no

i just think its fucking amazing that people have gone out and bought the cd instead of copying or bootlegging it. LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL!

Well I've seen your eyes as they flicked on me

What is he doing? What on earth's the plan? Has he got one?

You'd better give me some pointers

Since you are the big rocket launcher and I'm just the shotgun

Well I ain't got no dollar signs in my eyes

That might be a surprise but it's true

That I'm not like you and I don't want your advice

Or your praise or to move in the ways you do

Cause all you people are vampires

And all your stories are stale

And though you pretend to you'll stand by us

I know you're sure that we'll fail

Well I've seen your eyes as they flicked on me

What a confusion

Your snarl is just so condescending

Try to explain that we're onto a win

If you feel we get in

Near recoups what we're spending

He says, I can't believe that you drove all that way

Well how much did they pay ya? How much did they pay ya?

You'd've been better to stay round our way

Thinking 'bout things but not actually doing a thing

Cause all you people are vampires!

Its only talking about the fastest selling british rock debut album, a pretty small genre. It's just a way of creating media hype, get all the radio stations to mention this fact and boom they are the hottest thing around.

They released a catchy tune with terrible lyrics, trendy kids buy this shit up. It seems to happen every year, 2004 franz ferdinand, 2005 the killers, some indie band is rammed down our throats in the first quater of the month.

There first song, look at some of the lyrics, yeah the tune is catchy but it just proves people dont pay attention to the expression of music.

Stop making the eyes at me, I'll stop making the eyes at you

And what it is that surprises me is that I don't really want you to

And your shoulders are frozen (cold as the night)

Oh, but you're an explosion (you're dynamite)

Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand

And lighting the fuse might result in a bang, b-b-bang, go!

I bet that you look good on the dancefloor

I don't know if you're looking for romance or

I don't know what you're looking for

Well, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor

Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984

From 1984!

I wish you'd stop ignoring me, because it's sending me to despair

Without a sound, yeah, you're calling me, and I don't think it's very fair

That your shoulders are frozen (cold as the night)

Oh, but you're an explosion (you're dynamite)

Your name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand

Lighting the fuse might result in a bang, b-b-bang, go!

I bet that you look good on the dancefloor

I don't know if you're looking for romance or

I don't know what you're looking for

Well, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor

Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984

From 1984!

Oh, there ain't no love, no Montagues or Capulets

Are just banging tunes and DJ sets and...

Dirty dancefloors, and dreams of naughtiness!

Well, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor

I don't know if you're looking for romance or

I don't know what you're looking for

I said, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor

Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984

From 1984!

Infact its just a catchy chorus, this is meant to be british rock? Bollocks
