TiedHands
My cousin, who was about 18 when 'Appetite' came out, heard them. He really likes 'I.R.S', didn't really know what to think about 'TwaT' ("really long like some of their older stuff"), but he is amazed with 'Better'. He LOVES it... tat2d1
the people i've let hear it liked it. one 16 year old kid i let hear it said "you can tell he's doing some experimental stuff, but you can still hear elements of the GnR sound in there". i thought that pretty much nailed it. TiedHands
Yes, overall, 'Better' has gotten the best response by everyone at large. It's one of those universal songs that pretty much anyone and everyone can like. It will be a huge hit.
supersillyspacemonkey
when i showed people better in the beginning they were all like "wtf this sounds like barbie music" then i told em to wait and they got blown away.IRS didnt get a very well reaction because if you really look at it IRS isnt exactly a materpiece, but then i told them it was supposed to be a B-side anyway (which dizzy reed said it was) and showed em the other 2.overall i got great reactions and it was better than everyone was expecting.there were the odd few that were just bitter cause slash is gone and didnt really give it a chance. jah772
I played the song for a few of my friends. One friend who is real huge into classic rock thought he liked TWAT. My other friend said "what the hell is this shit we're listening to?" and turned it off. This was without him knowing who the band was. Oh well... 3rd Wheel
I played TWAT, Better and IRS for my friend....the exact convo., almost word for word, was as follows:Beginning of TWATHim - "Is this them?"Me - "Yeah."Him - "It doesn't sound like them...the band."Me - "You mean it doesn't sound like Guns 'N Roses?"Him - "Yeah."About 30 seconds later...Him - "This doesn't sound like Guns N Roses."Me - "Axl tried to evolve it."Him - "He's such a sellout. This sounds so much like a sellout song."Me - "Yeah but he wanted to take this in a new direction."Him - "Axl Rose went from being the coolest guy with the biggest dick to being the biggest fucking hooray for tolerance!."^^^I think this as well^^^After the first 30 seconds of IRS:Him - "Oh how far down you've gone, Axl. How far down indeed."After the first 10 seconds of Better:Him - "Turn this shit off."Me - "it aint good?"Him - "IT'S HORRIBLE!"This friend of mine is a very critical person. But when I looked over at him, I could see disgust at what he was hearing. He listened to AFD and liked it, and loves "Patience"(he says it's a good poker song). But other than that he doesn;t like anything post-1989 by GNR(except for KOHD) so he isn't a very big GNR fan.The people who have heard old GNR songs won't react well to this because it just doesn't sound like Guns N Roses. I don't know why, but I get that feeling. Edited February 20, 2006 by 3rd Wheel

adnan
Overall, the quality of There Was A Time, is getting people annoyed. the sound quality I mean. It's terrible.
SlashisGOD
I let a few of friends listen to the songs who are into hard rock/metal, and they were just like "ehh." They thought Better had some potential, but they hated the beginning. My parents, who were big GnR fans back in the day, liked Better somewhat, but didn't like TWAT or IRS at all. They like The Blues though, but that's about the only new song they like.

3rd Wheel
I guess my friend is just really critical.Someone who only listens to the first 10 seconds of a song to judge it is not critical, but an idiot. This is true also...and yes he heard the beginningto Better which a lot of ppl dont like and then like it later when it gets harder........but I figured that if he didn't like "There Was A Time", then he wouldn't like a lot of the stuff, b/c IMO "TWAT" is as good as it getsHis assumption for the first 30 secs of IRS was all he needs cause IRS doesnt change....the only thing he missed was the scream and the solo towards the end...other than that IRS is pretty straightforward and he didnt like it at alland my previous comment about Axl being a puss might of been a "agreeing with my friend b/c I see his point" sort of thing...I really don't know what to think about Axl anymore....when I watch Live at the Ritz 1988 I think that he's the coolest fucker alive, and when I watch RIR3 I think "wow he's not as energized, his voice sounds like a mouse, but he's still rockin out."...and when I listen to these songs I think "Wow he sounds great, I was worried about his voice but that sounds good."...yet I still, for some reason think of him as a pussy, b/c he knows that he'll get a video on MTV. Almost as if he's just going with the flow yet trying to be the "best at the flow"....yet this other part says he's still the coolest mother fucker alive cause he's BAXK and he's gonna TRY THIS the way he wants to try it...and he's going to re-create this band...all weird, don't know what to think of axl, whether he's cool or a poon

Ankh
Honestly the reaction is...sort of...just above "meh".Everyone i've shown them to likes them, but as much as the hardcore community wont like it, it comes back to "but its not as good as the old band"...these arent hardcore fans, just the general common interest fans.Everyone has said they liked the new stuff, but as i said...people WILL miss the old band i think, not hardcore fans, but, whatever...
