All the Smiths songs I've listened to, I've absolutely loved. I was thinking about buying an album to start off, either Singles or The Queen Is Dead.

I think there are too many songs on the singles album, and I'm not too fond of compilations ... While The Queen Is Dead I've only heard There Is A Light That Never Goes Out and Bigmouth Strikes Again, my favourite Smiths songs.

So what do you people recommend?

My recommendation is Louder Than Bombs, I don't know if it's available to you as it was made for American consumption, but it's a very good compilation that has close to nothing from the regular albums. It has 24 selections, so you will get more music than on one of the regular albums. Plus, with a career spanning set, you will get a more broad view of what The Smiths were. Avoiding compilations is not possible for a Smiths fan. The single only tracks were as good as the album tracks, and you need a compilation to get them.

Am i the only one who thinks The Smiths struggled with albums? i mean, take 'The Queen Is Dead' for instance, their much heralded masterpiece and while i enjoy it (it starts off brilliantly) your listening attention does start to waver towards the end of 'Never Had No One Ever', the 4th track. And also, this is an album, along with the other 3 they recorded i might add, that only just about makes the 40 minute mark with 9 tracks stretched across it and while it contains some unbelievably fantastic singles, there is filler. And it's not as if we're talking about a double album with filler, its a 'just about made into an album- filler'. Prefer em for their brilliant singles to be honest.

I don't really agree, although I do think "Never Had No One Ever" is the weakest track on The Queen Is Dead, I think the albums were solid enough, Strangeways, Here We Come is one of my favorites of all-time. Regarding the length issue, I think it had something to do with their deep connections to the 60's, their albums were short, good, and released in close proximity to eachother, just like it was in the 60's. Also, the length of the albums is even more forgivable due to the plethora of brilliant singles released inbetween them.

Well after never had no one ever come cemetary gates, bigmouth strikes again and the boy with the thorn in his side, you can hardly call them poor songs
