Anyone else love Jim Morrison's vocals?

I know his poetry was what made him an icon of the generation, and his words that he spoke and wrote are what freed the mindset of people and spoke to them, but I think his voice is really underrated. Some of their more straight-up rock songs like Peace Frog are awesome.

He once said he despised his own voice because all he did was yell and that he wished he could sound like Elvis (I think he said Elvis' voice had "experience of sex" or something). I have to disagree. Watch this:

His voice is velvet-y and deep there. It reminds me a bit of Elvis in that regard.

I love Morrison's vocals, and I actually think some of his poetry stuff gets overrated. There's no doubt he was a fine writer but some people tend to overrate his talents. I have his books of poetry, and some of them are - to say the least - a bit juvenile and cliched. I guess I just find it a shame that his poetry is focused on more so than his voice.

Jim's vocals were like an attitude, you could always tell his mood by his singing,I seen an interview of him when he was telling the reporter how he was not afraid to die,he was curious to what was waiting for him on "the other side".He died with a smile on his face,so I guess it was as good as he expected.I would have loved to be a young man in the late 60's and the early 70's,it was the time when people started to get tired of the normal, perdictable, boring, expectant, flow of everyday life,it was a time to be independent, free, and just do what made you happy, now it seems like things are getting back to that old way of everybody has to be the same, like the same things, and have the same attitudes.JIM MORRISON,I MISS YOU!

Id say hes a great vocalist in the same way mick jagger is.

technically he's nothing.

genius no doubt.

I once more agree with you.

Jim was an icon and wrote great lyrics but I think he served the band more with his incredible personality rather than with amazing singing abilities.

I do think that if he didn't have such an intense and deep voice, his words wouldn't have seemed so weighty.

One of the great rock vocalists...underrated to some extent.

He'd done so much damage to his voice by the time they recorded L.A. Woman, but even so...it still had a smokey backroom bar vibe about it that worked well for that album.
